Douliana, 20km east of Chania with truly spectacular views of Crete’s White Mountains, this idyllic little village perched atop a hill overlooking Souda Bay is surrounded by olive groves and terraced farmland criss-crossed by drystone walls and ancient Byzantine donkey paths. There’s a well stocked mini-market and a rustic little kafenion in the tiny village square and narrow little streets with whitewashed walls garlanded by flowers. On the edge of the village you will also find a delightful little taverna serving authentic and very tasty Cretan fare. From here, a track wends its way down the hillside to the nearest beach, which is just under 3 km and a wonderful walk, also navigable by car if you take it slowly over the rough spots. For a good selection of tavernas and shops of all descriptions, Kalives 5km away is the best choice although Almirida 4km distance, also has some excellent tavernas and lovely sandy beach.

Western Crete
As you laze at a sleepy taverna and marvel at the startling clarity of the ultramarine sea, sipping ice cold beer or Retsina, you will already have succumbed to the magic of Crete. Fringed by long sandy beaches, rocky coves and towering cliffs, the green but frequently rugged scenery is splashed with patches of wild flowers amongst olive groves. Crete is haphazardly scattered with Minoan palaces, mosques and minarets of Venetian and Turkish conquerors. For all that, lingering longest in the memory will be the hospitality of its people who understand the real meaning of filoxenia, the Greek word for hospitality to foreigners, still a way of life in rural Crete. Here is a land for all temperaments, blending fascinating layers of history with a proud and thriving folklore in a powerfully beautiful setting.
Chania Town
The focal point of Western Crete is the handsome town of Chania with its bustling covered market, fascinating old quarter steeped in history and the remarkable, picturesque Venetian harbour where dining by night at one of the many tavernas and soaking up the almost medieval atmosphere is an unforgettable experience. The town also has many modern shops and a number of supermarkets as well as numerous small bars and a few sophisticated night-clubs. Beyond the harbour is a good sandy beach fringed by some excellent fish tavernas. A regular bus service makes it easy to reach a greater choice of beaches a few miles west of the town. Chania is an ideal centre from which to explore Western Crete and to walk the famous Samaria Gorge.
