Cortijo Cairo in Berchules is a lovely house, a magnificent place to stay, very comfortable, very pleasant. It has all the modern commodities one can dream of: wash machine dishwasher, Aga oven in the kitchen, as well as two great bathrooms with large showers, long bathtubs and bidets on the first floor. There's a TV and DVD player in a corner of the house, and a fireplace to read cosily or talk around. There's a long table for big family dinners in the main room, and lovely, lovely bedrooms upstairs. The master bedroom has a terrace with magnificent view over the mountains by day and the starry sky by night. The only thing I would not recommend is to bring toddlers here. The house is built on a sharp slope and the outside staircases are quite steep. It's not a house to leave little ones roam free. It's quite tricky to park a car as well, especially if it is a big one. Better leave it in the village square. This place is perfect for people enjoying walks in the mountains. It's also great to paint landscape or to take pictures. The light is strong and changing. The animals around make a constant animation, sheep, goats, mules, horses, working dogs and lazy cats... And it's a great place to cook, the products of the region, the vegetables that one can buy in Cadiar are perfect to prepare all sorts of tasty dishes. The salads are just fantastic! So it's a remote and relaxing place where you'll just be worried about what next to cook and where you'll only be bothered by the sounds of the goats' bells. We obviously choose to have a quiet and relaxing time in the mountains for our first stay in Berchules, but we'll go back because there is much more to do, and plenty of places to visit.

Alpujarras retreat

Margrave Somerset
Review Submitted: June 4, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
This was our second attempt to stay at Cortijo Cairo, this time a short 1 week visit hoping to do some walking while the weather was not too hot. In the event it was 33 deg for most of the week and we just had to relax a bit. The house was as described, nicely restored, but the living area was rather dark - partly in keeping with the original windows but also because the lower floor is at ground level at the back, but below ground at the front. We spent a lot of time while in the house on the first floor terrace, which was delightful, with views towards the adjacent hillside as well as down the valley towards Cadiar. Scattered across the hillside were smal terraces where locals cultivated local products, and morning and evening one or more of the local goat and sheep herds would pass by the house with bells ringing on their way to Olive and Almonds groves to graze. There is a maze of small aquaducts around the hillside to provide water to each of the terraces, one such aquaduct features flowing in the photo of the cortijo. Car access is tight through the narrow streets of Alcutar, ok for the small car we hired, but work on a nearby property meant we parked in the centre of Alcutar most of the time. The were no problems on arrival, we were met in the centre of Alcutar and guided to the Cortijo and there was plenty of help available should we need it. We did not visit any local restaurants, preferring to feed ourselves, but instead found ourselves visiting the local markets to pick up fruit and vegetables etc. While not walking as much as planned, we did get around for shorter distances and saw lots of spring flowers etc. There is plenty of information in the house about the Alpujarras, particularly walking - guides and maps. There are lots of walks, with information on bus services returning to Alcutar for those wishing to go further afield. These buses also go to Orgiva and Granada. We found the village and house location entrancing and entirely suited to our needs, locals were friendly despite our lack of spanish and it was a very relaxing holiday.
