About Canet-Plage:
Canet is situated in the sunny south west corner of France near the Spanish border. It lies in the Roussillon region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees mountains which is a major wine, fruit and vegetable producing plain.The area is a very popular French holiday resort. Canet is a small seaside town spread along a wide sandy beach which stretches to the next town of St Cyprien. Canet Plage is ideal for families and couples. People like to walk, cycle and rollerblade along the front. In the summer there is an evening market, all day beach clubs and many other activities, some which are available all year -diving, swimming, tennis, sailing, fishing, horse riding, golf, wind-surfing, water skiing and cycling. The region is ideal for exploring all year round with beautiful mountain scenery, an abundance of vineyards, individual villages such as Fitou and Collioure and historical towns such as Carcassone nearby. It is possible to drive to Barcelona or the snowcapped mountains.
Canet Plage is open all year with lots of restaurants open between May and September.There is a market and small shops near the Place Mediterranean, the larger supermarket is a 20 minute walk away or catch a bus; there is a shopping trolley in the apartment to help you with your shopping. There are clothes and gift shops.There is a good tourist information office in the plaza also open all year. Canet is also a great place to visit out of season if you are looking for a romantic or peaceful break - the long,empty beaches stretch for miles. In summer there is an evening market and lots of activities around the plaza.There is a public indoor swimming pool just around the corner for a summer or winter swim.
There are organised trips available from Canet. There is a reliable bus service to Perpignan and to the airport. The airport now has regular flights from the UK and Ireland. It is possible to hire a car at Perpignan Airport and the drive to Canet-Plage is only 15 minutes.
Perpignan has some great shops and riverside restaurants and is busy all year. For those with a car, there are many wonderful vineyards to visit including those in the Fitou and Corbiere regions. The beautiful towns and villages nearby are full of historical interest as this is an area steeped in early French history. The ancient city of Carcassone, the artists' seaside town of Coulliore and Barcelona, only 90 minutes away, are just a few of the many fantastic towns to visit. There are beautiful views to be found in the plains of the Pyrenees and by driving further into the highlands to the ski resorts. You are guaranteed a truly 'French' experience in this area - good food and wine! Stopping for lunch is essential!
