This elegant apartment is attached to the owners' farmhouse, at the head of 3000 square metres of garden. Clients share the owners' pool, which is heated, fenced and lockable. The internal accommodation is supplemented by a charming terrace with dining area under a shelter of vines. The enormous bedroom is divided by screens and curtains, in order to preserve its spacious volume, and has a king-size bed, a three-quarter bed and a small antique iron bed. The apartment is fully equipped for permanent living, with fridge, washing-machine, dishwasher, microwave, etc., and all kitchen equipment. It is beautiful, colourful where appropriate! though most of its internal walls are of the local honey-toned stone, with original beams. Bed linen is provided; towels are not. We are in a working village of 12 houses, in a rural area which is 6 km from the A10 autoroute, Junction 36 and 30 minutes' drive from the coast at Royan. Easy access to supermarkets, bars and restaurants.

Situated only 5 km from J.36 of the A10 autoroute, the apartment is in a rural area, but has good access to the channel port of St. Malo (4 hours' drive, easy conditions), the airports of Bordeaux and La Rochelle (just over one hour in each case), the beaches of Royan, St. Georges and the Cote Sauvage, and the lovely towns of Saintes and Cognac. The area is rich in history, being on the main pilgrim route from Northern Europe to Compostello, and every village has its own 12th century church. Music festivals are a feature of the region, with all genres catered for. There are activities for the adventurous, like the Acrobranche at St. Georges, and two golf clubs are within easy reach. Tennis can be arranged in the village, and we are happy to lend you our bikes. The beaches north of Royan have few facilities but strong Atlantic waves. There are many reasonably priced restaurants within easy reach, where the food is excellent.

  • Rental prices are based on two people sharing and are based on £175 pw regardless of the time of year. Additional occupants will be charged according to age, etc. Examples: one couple with one child: £475 per week, one couple with two children: £550 per week. We prefer to receive the money in euros please, and we accept the exchange-rate that the clients have obtained on the date in question. Assuming, that is, that everyone is in the same boat, and chases the best exchange-rate available !
  • Security of clients' belongings: the apartment is totally independent of the house, where we live . A connecting door is locked on both sides, clients have their own keys for apartment and pool, and are responsible for security . (locking doors, closing shutters at night, etc.) The ample off-road parking ensures the safety of cars.

  • Unlimited hot water is included in the rental price. Central heating can be made available for early-season lets at extra cost. Towels are not normally provided but can be made available at additional cost if required. The living-room is above the kitchen, with TV. Video and DVD player, sofas for 4 people, plus a sofa-bed which converts to a king-size bed. There is a library of up-to-date fiction and some puzzles and games. The kitchen has all equipment, an antique dining-table and chairs, music centre. It is supplemented by the outside dining-area under a shelter of vines.

  • The large family room is divided with screens and curtains, but total privacy is not assured. It is an enormous space, very elegant and calming. The beds are furnished with good quality duvets, and linen is provided, with a change for the second week if this is required. There are enough cupboards, wardrobes, shelves etc. to accommodate holiday makers' needs, plus chests of drawers, bedside table, lamps, mirrors, etc. It is extremely comfortable.The bathroom has lavatory, wash-basin, shower, both with unlimited hot water, shelves and linen basket.

Notes: We bought the farmhouse, almost derelict, in 1992, and have been working on it ever since! Although the building development work was completed by 1997, when we installed the pool, we continue to make annual improvements. One of the pleasures.....and a lot of hard work, is the English-style garden, with a small orchard, gravelled areas, and hollyhocks, which are a local 'signature' plant. There is ample off-road parking, and the pool is well-protected from the elements and from view. The area is rich in history and one of its strengths is the abundance of live music in all genres. Likewise, good restaurants and markets. Bird-watchers and cyclists are happy here, and it is a good place to drop out and find a more tranquil way of life than we are used to in the UK. Shopping is a good experience, whether in the local markets or the many supermarkets, and of course the coast is a comfortable half-hour's drive away.

Use of the Pool: The salt-water pool is heated, fenced and lockable. It is shared with the owners, with occasional use by their friends and family. It is kept locked at all times when not in use and guests have their own key. There is ample pool furniture, umbrellas, etc. On the pool-side, we take care to ensure that guests enjoy uninterrupted time in the pool; when we are alone in the house we like to swim at about 4 pm, and when our family and friends are with us, we arrange use of the pool to everyone's satisfaction.

Golf and other sports: There are two golf-clubs within an hour's drive, a tennis club in the village and various water-sports on the coast. The area is very good for cycling (being flat!). Fishing is a popular sport, and there are many local activities organised in the surrounding villages. We can lend you our boules if you'd like to try your hand at the national pastime.

Advice about children: The apartment is spacious and elegant, and fully equipped, but total privacy is not assured in the family bedroom. In terms of space it is probably luxurious for a couple, more than adequate for a couple with one child, and pushing the facilities a bit if there are two children as there is only one bathroom. It is not suitable for toddlers or people with physical impairment, as there is an open stairway between the floors.
