Albufeira, Portugal’s most popular resort has been described as the ‘Tourist Capital’ of the Algarve. Spreading from the old town, east and west along the coast, there are sandy coves and golden beaches which draw an assorted crowd, from families with young children to retired couples. Everyone finds something to enjoy here which retains its old world charm in narrow alleyways behind the new hip and happening. In the eastern part of the town lies the Rue Candido dos Reis or, better known locally as ‘The Strip’, which runs from the Montechoro Hotel down to the beach, the Praia da Oura. This area is lined with dozens of cafes, restaurants and bars. In contrast, the old town of Albufeira has a special charm all of its own, with its sleepy cobbled side streets and alleyways that criss cross the town, many of them converging in the main square which at night comes alive with the throng of people, music, lights, sounds and aromas of the many restaurants and bars.
