We are situated in the Charente Maritime on the west coast of France. Nearby are the historic towns of La Rochelle and Rochefort. This area is rich in History with many forts, Romanesque churches, castles and Chateau. Sandy beaches just 20 mins. The 17th century Farmhouse and Pigeonnier have recently been renovated to a very high standard. We are surrounded by rolling countryside with fields of sunflowers and wheat, close to a pretty Charentaise village with local shop, bar, post office and famously local restaurant specializing in local cuisine. Nearby there’s fishing, cycling, pony riding and lovely country walks. The Pigeonnier:- Open plan accommodation, self contained on one level, lounge area with a double bed settee, tv, dvd player, fireplace with a woodburner, a separate well equipped kitchen and shower room. Large double bed, mezzanine that can sleep upto 2 children. Outside there's a seating area, bbq, large garden, children's play area and free hire of cycles & POOL

New for summer 2009 Le Pressoir, it's a detached converted stone farm building with high beamed ceilings, that was once used for pressing the grapes to make the wine. One double bedroom, one twin bedroom, shower room with a large walk in shower, open plan well equipped kitchen/lounge with a bed settee, tv & dvd player. Private out door eating area with a choice of BBQs and overlooking open countryside on one side & the courtyard to the other side .

Sandy beaches are just a 20mins drive away at Chàtelaillon-Plage or Fouras (35 Mins) both are quaint small seaside resorts with beautiful sandy beaches, dotted with bars, restaurants and Casino's. . La Rochelle is a lively vibrant city with lots of atmosphere, along the fortified port there’s numerous cafés and bars, boating marina, boat trips to the local islands and fort Boyard, Aquarium, museums, bowling, animal park, casino, fantastic shops and boutiques, lots of seafood restaurants and beaches. Easy access to the local islands of Ile de Re with the beautiful fishing ports of St. Martin and La Flotte, Ile d'Oleron, Ile d'Aix and Ile Madam Venise Vert is about a 30mins drive north from here, a totally different experience with an intricate canal system to explore, you can hire kayaks or even electric boats for the whole family. Great days out can be had at Puy de fou, Futurescope, Cognac, Zoo, Wild bird reserves, Corderie Royale, etc. You'll find something to suit everyone.

Notes: Le Pressoir sits in a beautiful courtyard of a 17th Century Traditional Charentaise Farmhouse with use of the enclosed & private 11x5 meter outdoor swimming pool & a choice of sun loungers. There is also a large garden with a football net, swings, large wendy house & trampoline and a good choice of various other outdoor toys. Surrounded by fields of sunflowers & wheat, close to a pretty charentaise village, that is a 10mins walk away. We also have a camion de pain (bread van) who visits here every day except Mondays around 10 oclock in the mornings, he sells various types of bread and patisserie.

What's on?: In the local village of Landrais you will find a locally famous Restaurant 'Le Bateau Lavior' which serves local Charentaise Dishes, they open Friday & Saturday evenings and Sunday Lunchtimes. There's also the bar/restaurant/shop 'La maison d'Escargo', Pizza van who visits Landrais on Monday & Saturday evenings, village post office, Artist studio and a Garage (it's not possible to buy Petrol). Antique Markets (brocantes) & Car boots (vide greniers) usually most weekends from April to October. For more upto date local information please visit our website; www.larochellegite.com

Pony riding: Pony Riding at Toucherit (10min walk away). 1 hour ride from 15euro's, 1/2 day from 30 euro's, 2 hours of riding. 1 day from 40 euro's ( picnic not included), 2 hours of riding in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.

Art lessons: In the village of Landrais there is an artist studio, it's possible to arrange an hours lesson in painting 20 euro's per hour (it would be ideal if you have a good level of French).

Golf: Saintes has an 18 hole golf course 45mins drive. Saint Laurent de Preé near Fouras has a 9 hole golf course 35mins drive. La Jarne close to La Rochelle has a 9 hole golf course 20mins drive.

We had a lovely 9 days at Le Pressoir. The gite was so nice it felt like home! Thank you to Nigel and Suzanne who were great hosts. The location of the gite was perfect, set in a quiet location but only half an hour drive to La Rochelle and Rochefort which had plenty of interesting museums to visit. We enjoyed our trips to Ile de Re and Ile de Aix, the Aquarium at La Rochelle and the Zoo at Royen. We were especially pleased to visit at the same time as the Grand Pavois so we got to see the floating boat show and excellent firework display. There are plenty of great restaurants around, for local cuisine Bateau Lavoir in the village, for excellent seafood Andre's in La Rochelle and Le Belem at St Martin on the Ile de Re. All in all a great holiday and if you choose this gite you won't be disappointed.

Having recently spent a week in Le Pressoir with my partner, I can honestly say that it was a pleasurable experience, and would certainly recommend it for the cleanliness and freshness of the accommodation throughout. It was well equiped and we wanted for nothing, and our hosts were friendly and helpful in every way without being overbearing.
It is ideally situated for easy access to the local coastal beaches (approx 20 minutes drive), and we also visited Cognac and Royen. The local village of Landrais is within walking distance or you can use one of the cycles provided if you prefer. Here you will find a shop and a bar for basic provisions. There is also a restaurant that was lovely, though don't bother eating for several hours before you visit, as the food is plentiful and rather tasty! The local town Surgiers is also convenient for the purchase of locally produced foods at the market, where we bought wonderful fish, cheeses and salads.
All in all very happy and look forward to returning in the future.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday staying in the Pressoir. The accommodation is very clean and to a high standard. Although it only has one bedroom it was perfectly comfortable for my two children to sleep on the sofabed in the lounge/kitchen area. The grounds and play area were a perfect setting for a relaxing break for us all. The location was ideal as you could enjoy peace and quiet of the countryside and still only be 20 minutes to the beach/resorts. Nigel and Suzanne went out of their way to be extremely helpful and friendly whilst respecting our privacy. We would definitely visit again.

We have recently returned from a 2 week stay at this property and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The gite is lovely and excellently equipped, especially in the kitchen area. We have an 18 month old daughter and found the gite fairly child friendly and more than big enough for the 3 of us.

The location of the gite is great as well. The grounds have a nice sized swimming pool and the garden area is great for little ones with swings, a large trampoline and a play house which our daughter loved. The surrounding countryside, which you can see from every window in the gite, is beautiful and the peace and quiet is bliss!

It is well placed for sightseeing with good access to connecting roads to get you around this area of France.

The owners are lovely too. Before we arrived I was a little dubious about staying at the same site that the owners live at, but Nigel and Suzanne are helpful and friendly whilst still respecting your privacy.

This was our first time to France doing this type of holiday and Le Pressoir has certainly set a high bench mark! We would thoroughly recommend it.
