We are situated in the Charente Maritime on the west coast of France. Nearby are the historic towns of La Rochelle and Rochefort. This area is rich in History with many forts, Romanesque churches, castles and Chateau. Sandy beaches just 20 mins. The 17th century Farmhouse and Pigeonnier have recently been renovated to a very high standard. We are surrounded by rolling countryside with fields of sunflowers and wheat, close to a pretty Charentaise village with local shop, bar, post office and famously local restaurant specializing in local cuisine. Nearby there’s fishing, cycling, pony riding and lovely country walks. The Pigeonnier:- Open plan accommodation, self contained on one level, lounge area with a double bed settee, tv, dvd player, fireplace with a woodburner, a separate well equipped kitchen and shower room. Large double bed, mezzanine that can sleep upto 2 children. Outside there's a seating area, bbq, large garden, children's play area and free hire of cycles & POOL

NEW FOR 2009 ENCLOSED OUTDOOR SWIMMING POOL 11X5 METERS. The Farmhouse has been recently modernised in 2006 to a very high standard in keeping with old French charm and a contemporary feel with modern facilities. Downstairs has a large lounge with a large fireplace and a wood burner, there’s a separate dining area in a well equipped kitchen. Stairs are leading to a spacious landing with a double sofa bed, two bedrooms one double and one twin. Large bathroom with a roll top bath and a separate shower. Outside there are separate table and chairs for each of the gites, BBQ and a large garden with children's play area, swings, Wendy house, football goal and sun loungers, plus free hire of cycles. We have approximately 4500 square metres of Garden and plenty of, off road parking spaces.

Sandy beaches are just a 20mins drive away at Chàtelaillon-Plage or Fouras (35 Mins) both are quaint small seaside resorts with beautiful sandy beaches, dotted with bars, restaurants and Casino's. . La Rochelle is a lively vibrant city with lots of atmosphere, along the fortified port there’s numerous cafés and bars, boating marina, boat trips to the local islands and fort Boyard, Aquarium, museums, bowling, animal park, casino, fantastic shops and boutiques, lots of seafood restaurants and beaches. Easy access to the local islands of Ile de Re with the beautiful fishing ports of St. Martin and La Flotte, Ile d'Oleron, Ile d'Aix and Ile Madam Venise Vert is about a 30mins drive north from here, a totally different experience with an intricate canal system to explore, you can hire kayaks or even electric boats for the whole family. Great days out can be had at Puy de fou, Futurescope, Cognac, Zoo, Wild bird reserves, Corderie Royale, etc. You'll find something to suit everyone.

What's on?: In the local village of Landrais you will find a locally famous Restaurant 'Le Bateau Lavior' which serves local Charentaise Dishes, they open Friday & Saturday evenings and Sunday Lunchtimes. There's also the bar/restaurant/shop 'La maison d'Escargo', Pizza van who visits Landrais on Monday & Saturday evenings, village post office, Artist studio and a Garage (it's not possible to buy Petrol). Pony riding: Pony Riding at Toucherit (10min walk away). 1 hour ride from 15euro's, 1/2 day from 30 euro's, 2 hours of riding. 1 day from 40 euro's ( picnic not included), 2 hours of riding in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.

Art lessons: In the village of Landrais there is an artist studio, it's possible to arrange an hours lesson in painting 20 euro's per hour (it would be ideal if you have a good level of French).

Golf: Saintes has an 18 hole golf course 45mins drive. Saint Laurent de Preé near Fouras has a 9 hole golf course 35mins drive. La Jarne close to La Rochelle has a 9 hole golf course 20mins drive.

The farmhouse, landrais, la Rochelle

We have just returned from a fantastic holiday at the farmhouse. The accommodation is extremely spacious, decorated and maintained to a very high standard and in an environment, which ouses tranquility. The owners, nigel and suzanne and their children were extremely helpful and welcoming, which made our stay perfect. There was everything you could possibly need and the accommodation is located where you are away from it all but close enough to a wide variety of attractions if you manage to drag yourself away from the fantastic new pool and that good book you've been meaning to read. We did manage to explore the area and visted beautiful La Rochelle, the beaches at fourais, picturesque Saintes and nearby Surgeres, which is worthy of a look. We had a great time and would recommend this property to anyone with a love and appreciation for the good life.

A Little dissappointed for the money.

We have stayed in a few gites in France now and was a little dissappointed with this one,as this was for us an expensive stay .We, as a family, found the location too far from anywhere.The location of the farmhouse is very pretty, set in open countryside with lovely views, but it took us atleast 30-40mintues+ to get to the coast.(could have been my navigating).
Also, the other gites have all provided us with a basic start up for our arrival, i,e coffee bread jam milk,items like black bags, dishwasher tablets.None of this was at the farmhouse so take EVERYTHING, including toilet roll.As we like to cook, we found the kitchen a little basic with storage and utensils.The Farmhouse was clean and the hosts were happy to provide local info which we needed.The pool is not heated but this proved no feat for our two children who loved it.
Our six year old daughter enjoyed all the outdoor toys provided, trampoline, house, swings etc.
I would recommend this property if you are prepared to drive.
Owner's Response: I would just like to add, our nearest beach is Chatelaillon (11 miles) a genuine 20 minutes drive from us. If you read the reviews from our other guests, they all found us to be ideally & centrally located for the coast and tourist attractions. We unfortunatly do not provide coffee, bread, jam & milk on your arrival as it is self catering, but if requested beforehand we can put some basics in the fridge for when you arrive. However you will find a welcome bottle of wine, toilet rolls, black & yellow bin liners, washing up liquid & sponges etc all to get you started in the gite.
Our main priority is to make our guests stay here as relaxing & comfortable as possible and we do take notice of our clients opinions.
Next year for 2010 we are hoping to heat the pool with solar panels.

The Farmhouse - Beautifully Presented

My wife, myself and our daughter Olivia (20 months) enjoyed a wonderful week in The Farmhouse, situated 20 minutes from the Atlantic coast and 5-10 minutes from a variety of differing sized villages. The location was perfect, surrounded by wheat fields, peaceful but without any feeling of isolation.

Nigel & Suzanne were fantastic hosts offering advice on local beaches, destinations and attractions. There was another, smaller gite (The Pigeonniere), which was equally well presented, and a third one just approaching completion - again this appeared to be being finished to the same very high standard.

The Farmhouse provides a huge amount of living space, and is decorated in a beautifully chic country style. It was spotlessly clean and equipped with everything required for a thoroughly relaxing holiday. The living room really isn't done justice by the web photos, it's a fabulous space providing lots of comfort and character. Equally the light bedrooms and bathroom are presented in a stylish and timeless fashion. Our daughter (less concerned by the interior design!) was freely provided a cot, stairgate, highchair, and toys on arrival – all this before she ventured outside the next morning to discover the swings, trampoline and a wendyhouse that was filled with all her heart could desire!

The walled swimming pool had just been constructed before we arrived and this, together with the seating area and BBQ to the side of the house, provided more excuses often not to venture too far from home. We did get around though, and found Chatelaillon-Plage (20 mins), Foras (25mins), La Rochelle (30 mins) Ile de Ré (30/40 mins) all great days out and within very easy driving distance. Equally accessible was the fantastic zoo at La Palmyre / Royan.

We would be delighted to return to stay here again, the situation of the gites would be perfect for extended families to stay occupying a couple of the properties together – maybe something for the future...

Pigeonierre

We stayed in the pigeonierre for a week and had a wonderful holiday.
We arrived early and had the chance to meet the owners nigel and suzie who showed us around all three gites. They were all clean, well maintained and the standard of finish and decoration was first class. There was a large trampoline and swings for the children and a lawned area to play football (nets supplied).
The properties are in a rural location surrounded by fields of sun flowers. We used the bicycles to ride around the quiet nearby village and surgeres (restaurants, shops etc) is only 12 mins by car. La rochelle is within easy reach and so is ile de re.
We will definitely return to the gites when we next visit the area.

We had a fantastic week in Nigel & Suzanne’s Farmhouse with our 20 month old son. The accommodation both met and exceeded our expectations from the holiday-rentals advert, we really could not have asked for more. The accommodation is situated amongst open farming land and whilst only being a short drive from the large towns of Rocheford and La Rochelle boasts of nothing but views of open rural space and a sense of tranquillity. The accommodation is clean, comfortable and welcoming with all required facilities available on hand, for those with (and probably without!) children there is also the added bonus of a spacious garden with enough space for kicking a ball around or simply just relaxing on the various garden furniture, the playhouse and trampoline were particular hits with our toddler! As far the surrounding areas are concerned there is certainly no shortage of options for exploration and leisure activities, we would personally recommend trips to the nearby town of La Rochelle and the neighbouring island of Il-De-Re, further a field (approx 90 mins drive) we enjoyed a fantastic day out at la-vallee-des-singes, a wildlife park dedicated to Monkeys and various other primates! Although travelling towards the end of September we did not hit the beach season the beaches near La Rochelle and at Royan we visibly of a high quality and of easy driving distance from the accommodation. Nigel & Suzanne really have done a fantastic job with the Farmhouse, we also had a look around their other rental property (the Pigeonnier) which had been renovated to an equally high standard, as hosts you could not ask for more, they were always available for advise or passing conversation but never intrusive. We would recommend this property to anyone looking to holiday in this region of France, our only regret is that we didn't stay longer......
