The Main House has been the subject of a complete renovation and provides a stylish interior, where contemporary comfort blends with the traditional features of this seventeenth century former olive mill. The acacia-shaded dining terrace winds down to further terraces and the attractive plunge pool. This 10 m2 pool has a teak decked 'beach', is unheated and is exclusively for the use of the Main House. There is a table-tennis table at the very bottom of the garden, under the twelfth-century Saracen clocktower. The Small House, ideal for a romantic getaway, is set back from its neighbour with its own private garden. Both houses used to be in the grounds of the former Chateau, since replaced by La Chapelle de Notre Dame, and are tucked away in the oldest part of Aups. Guests enjoy the convenience of walking two minutes to the Boulangerie then breakfasting in the seclusion of their own garden before setting out (or not!) to explore the beauty of this special corner of Provence

Both houses are double-glazed, with woodburning-stoves. There are also wall-mounted electric radiators for cooler evenings. Throughout the Main House the use of stylish contemporary tiles in restrained muted colours, designed in Aix en Provence and produced in Morocco, help provide a relaxing environment in which to unwind. The Small House's use of local Salernes tiles give it character and charm. Both houses are fully equipped with kitchen utensils, bed linens and towels. The nature of the Main House garden, with some high terraces make it unsuitable for young children. The Main House has a dining table under the dappled shade of the large spreading acacia tree. Weber BBQ. Table tennis. There are Lafuma deckchairs dotted around and a couple of mattresses beside the 10 square meter plunge pool. The Small House garden has deckchairs and an outside dining-table. South-facing and sunny but with shade provided by overhanging fig trees.

The friendly market town of Aups, with a population of 1800, retains a medieval village atmosphere whilst providing essential services to the area; Credit Agricole bank, pharmacy, doctor's surgery, supermarket, boulangeries, boucheries, and a good selection of restaurants. The winding narrow streets with their ancient flower bedecked houses are fascinating to explore. Aups is a 20min drive to the wild and dramatic Gorges du Verdon - the deepest gorge in Europe - and the Lac de St Croix, for swimming or wind surfing in its brilliant turquoise blue waters. Terraced vineyards, olive groves and pine forests surround the town whilst the pretty neighbouring villages of Cotignac, Villecroze or Tourtour are all delightful to visit and discover on foot. Further afield Aix-en-Provence, St Tropez or Cannes and the beaches of the Cote d'Azur are just over an hours drive. Low cost airlines serve Marseille, Toulion and Nice. High speed train station at Aix en Provence TGV.

Coast/Beach/Aups: Nearest beaches are St Maxime/St Tropez and Frejus, both around 60km. The Lac St Croix, 15 minutes drive, has pebbly beaches and pedalos. Great for swimming.

Travel/Distance: Both Nice (EasyJet) and Marseille (EasyJet and RyanAir) are 90 minutes drive. Toulon/St Tropez airport at Hyeres is served by RyanAir and is about 80 minutes away. Nearest train station is Les Arcs/Draguignan, a 40 minute drive. Regular guests also use the overnight Motorail service from Calais to Avignon, which is 2 hours drive distant. Aups is a large medieval village with narrow winding streets to explore. Three butchers, three bakers, cafes and good local restaurants. Excellent market under the plane trees in the central square on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Intermarche Supermarket is on the edge of Aups towards Salernes or Casino Supermarket on the edge of Salernes. Caisse Epargne and Credit Agricole Banks in Aups. Pharmacy, English-speaking Doctor's surgery. Aups Tourist Office next to La Mairie will give details of leisure activities and local places of interest. Local walking maps for the wooded hills behind Aups. The dramatic Gorges du Verdon, 25 minutes drive.

Distance: Tourtour, the village in the sky - 15 minutes drive Cotignac, very pretty with Tuesday market - 25 minutes drive. Salernes, centre for tiles, Sunday market - 15 minutes drive Draguignan, major shopping - 30 minutes drive. Abbaye de Thoronet, fine C12th Cistercian Abbey - 35 minutes drive. Seillans la Cascade waterfall - 1.

Ski: Drive north to spend a night in Barcelonette for the ski slopes, about 2 1/2 hours distant

Golf: St Endreol near Le Muy and Barbaroux, near Brignoles are about 40 minutes drive away with more courses in the Cannes area.

Great little house in Aups

We had a fantastic two weeks in September 2008 in the Small House in Aups. The village of Aups is one of the nicest in this area and our accommodation was great. Plenty of room, clean, comfortable with all the necessary facilities- small rustic outside area for sipping wine or having a cup of tea/coffee to the wonderful sound of the bells in the campanile. We just loved the view from the back and took countless photos of the campanile. The Small House is situated in the higher area of the village with wonderful narrow streets to explore and the short stroll to the centre took less than a minute. Plenty of history associated with the village. We had a car for the two weeks and found Aups very central for discovering the many delightful villages including Moustiers St. Marie, Tourtours, Salernes the Gorge du Verdon, Aix en Provence. No problem parking the car - just 20 - 50 metres from property. There is a supermarket on the outskirts of the village and plenty of small shops in the centre.

We had a superb meal at the restaurant at Sillans la Cascade which we would highly recommend.

A Holiday to Remember

This wonderful little house reflects the village in which it is located, charming and accommodating. I have had the pleasure of staying here every year for the past decade and each year is better than the last. The few restaurants in Aups are wonderful, as well as many in nearby villages. The location is second to none. Day trips to Cannes, Aix, Nice, Moustiers, and Villefranche-sur-Mer. And, of course, an evening in Monte Carlo cannot be missed. Several vineyards in the area offer extraordinary wines at very reasonable prices. The small village of Aups has all one needs for a comfortable stay. Outdoor market on Wednesday and Saturday. For those who enjoy cooking, the kitchen is equipped with all the necessities; full complement of pots and pans, dishes, utensils, etc. Above all else, the house is hospital clean and very well maintained. I spend my entire year looking forward to my visit to Aups. I highly recommend a stay in this perfect little house.
