The self catering apartment opens onto the sun terrace overlooking the olive grove and our paddocks. The area boasts many rare species of flora and fauna, including orchids, storks, birds of prey and otters, wild boar and deer in country criss-crossed by tracks and lanes. The apartment forms the ground floor of our villa, with its own front door and terraces. The monte (farm) is 10 mins from the main N/S routes, providing easy access to the south (Algarve) and the quieter west coast. The local markets, shops and the bakery at Santana are a few minutes drive and there are local restaurants serving traditional Alentejan cuisine and wines at very reasonable prices. There are many local historic sites and large lakes. Horseback riding and cycling are available to enjoy the stunning countryside The area is renowned for the quality of light during the day and the clarity of the night skies. A lovely place to unwind. Mains electricity. Pets by arrangement. Long lets also available.

Alcaria Alta is located 45 mins from Faro, 10 mins from the IC1 and A2 motorway, providing easy access to the Algarve and Western coastal areas. Ourique and Castro Verde boast a 'castle' and fortnightly market respectively. Castro da Cola is an ancient settlement and surrounded by lovely walking country and there is a good restaurant near the ancient settlement for refreshment. There is fishing and boating on Santa Clara Lake. We offer horseback riding on site and cater for all levels of ability and interest. Our horses are fit and well trained. Use of our bicycles is included in the rental price. Alcaria Alta is located in an area of Ecological Reserve. The wildlife is of special interest boasting many rare species of bird, amphibian and even wild boar and deer. The hillsides are planted with olive, cork oak and eucalyptus trees. Silves and Monchique, Loule and Almodovar typify the variety in the region and are within easy driving distance. Nearest golf 40 mins.

    Pets are welcome. If suitable we charge extra per week and ask for a deposit €100 against damages on arrival.

Notes: The interior sitting area contains TV, Satellite, DVD player and CD player. There is a small library, some board games and the room is air conditioned. Fans are also provided for warmer weather! There is over 80m2 of outside patio space including a sanded area for the pool and two large terraces. Overlooking the olive grove, the sun terrace is fully furnished capturing the most of the sunny days. A splash pool is available in the warmer weather usually from May to September, under a bamboo shade. If you prefer respite from the sun you are welcome to relax on the bamboo terrace, shaded by plants and trees. Dogs are welcome by prior arrangement. Washing machine and drying facilities are also available included in the price.

Activities: There are many opportunities for outdoor activities which include cycling (Bicycles on site), horseback riding (on site), walking, bird watching (some very rare birds visit here in the Spring!), golf (Silves is the nearest course), and on the coasts, sailing. Recently spotted wildlife includes the Red-legged Partridge, Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Golden Plover, Thekla Lark and Hoopoe, amongst others. We have local maps for walks and reference material for wildlife spotting. The monte is located in the middle of a large area of Ecological terrain criss crossed by many dirt tracks. The hills are steep and the valleys beautiful, especially in Spring and Autumn, when the weather is cooler and there is some rainfall. The bees are active all year except the hottest months, producing the lovely floral local honey.

Horseback Riding: Our horses are all well mannered and selected for temperament. This is a wonderful way to see this landscape of olives and cork oak. We do not have to ride on tarmac, tending to keep to the tracks and off-track, where the land is largely unfenced. This affords a unique opportunity to appreciate this lovely area. We cater for all ages and abilities, adventure riding for the experienced rider and lead rein for the very young or novice, and everything in between! Whatever your ability, you can enjoy the countryside on horseback.

Golf: Silves is the nearest golf course and is about 25 minutes away. There are many easily accessible courses near and in the Algarve, within 45 minutes drive.

Just had the most wonderful two weeks at Alcaria Alta, a property set in stunning surroundings in the peace and quiet of the Alantejo but within easy reach of major roads to enable visiting the many places of interest in the region.
The property was top class with every amenity you could wish for, was spotlessly clean and immaculately maintained.
The ever-helpful Ruth and Graham (owners) were on hand if needed to help and advise in all aspects – from places to visit, where to buy essentials etc. etc. and the social time spent in their company will last long in the memory – as will playing dominoes and cards!!!
Horse riding is new to us but we 'had a go' and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Thanks for letting us share your piece of paradise for two weeks and hope that your venture continues to be a success.

We were made to feel very welcome by the owners
There was nothing you could fault the accomodation was amaculate.
I would strongly recommend that anyone looking for a getaway visits.
The surroundings in which the property is set in are breathtaking there is no words to describe them you must go see for yourself and you will be overwhelmed.
The accomodation provides horse trekking which i would strongly recommend you have ago.

A PERFECT PLACE TO RELAX AND UNWIND

Wonderful accommodation well maintained with everything you would wish for, for a home from home and spotlessly clean throughout. A wonderful welcome and nothing was too much trouble, would thoughly recommend the Horse riding and wonderful walks, scenery and birdwatching. Eating out was both delicious and so much more reasonable than the Algarve. We went home feeling relaxed and refreshed and have booked to come back again next year.
