Beautiful cottage well worth a visit!

Review Submitted: March 11, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2008
We visited the house in July 2008 and stayed for an enjoyable week with our 2 children. The house has plenty of space - a very comfortable living room with plenty of seating for the whole family and lots of equipment (UK TV, DVD etc). Brian is a very amenable and friendly man who ensured that everything was ready for our stay. We were welcomed and 'shown the ropes' by a friendly English and French speaking local family who provided a welcome pack of bread, wine milk and cheese on our arrival and gave plenty of ideas for days out and visits as well!
The property was clean, well maintained - very much a home from home experience with everything you would need in the kitchen - all as described on the website. I would heartily recommend this house to all our friends and hope to visit again this year!

First visit to this area

Review Submitted: September 17, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
First impressions were very favourable - quiet countryside, narrow lanes with little traffic, all this for a reasonable rent shared between two couples.

The description was accurate, the property clean with a warm welcome from the owner's representative and a pack of milk, cheese, bread and wine.

There were lots of leaflets for ideas of what to see and do to peruse on our arrival whilst enjoying our first glass of wine.

We had lunch at a cafe (not the fishermens' hut!) at the larger of the two nearby lakes. 10 euros for main, pudding and glass of wine.

We visited Sauvigny and its priory, the Puy de Dome area with its numerous extinct volcanoes (which is two hours away but don't be deterred by that), and Vichy.

At the Puy de Dome, there is a car park (6.15euros per car) shop and eating area about two-thirds of the way up with stunning views. Carry on walking up from there for the really fabulous views of the string of volcanoes and to watch hangliders taking off just a few feet from you.

Vichy is beautiful and just an hour or so away. Take the land train around the place so you don't miss anything- well worth it. We ladies hoped to look around the shops but instead we visited a museum at Gannat then on to le chateau de Veauce.

The latter is being renovated by the French government even though we were lead to believe it is in private hands. It is the oldest chateau in France dating from 808. You park outside the gate lodge, which is now a bar and tearoom run by an English-speaking lady, and walk as far as is permitted up the drive. Look to your left and there's the chateau-no charge except perhaps for an excellent cuppa before you leave.

We visited a local auberge (inn) recommended by the agent for a 5-course lunch for 12 euros - don't go Fridays if you don't like seafood! Generally, wherever we ate was value for money.

All in all, the cottage is a good place to stay if you don't mind driving to places.

P.S. Dressing table mirrors would be very welcome.

Location, location, location!

Clariceau Corsham, Wiltshire, UK
Review Submitted: August 6, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
If you want to completely relax, no noise, no distractions and ohhh so little passing traffic this is the place for you! It was just lovely to sit out the front in the evening, with nothing but birdsong to accompany a BBQ and a game of cards. Layout of the house was exactly right and there was plenty of room for a family with kids - there would also be room for grandparents?. All the rooms a decent size and kitted out with everything you'd need as a proper home from home! Most importantly, decent comfy beds and fans in bedrooms to keep you cool at night! No mozzies! The village of Vrolles is very rural (main traffic passing when we were there was the tractors harvesting!), close by you have Montlucon with the big shops like Carrefour and a really lovely little town centre. We also ventured into Neris les Bains which was so lovely, just great for a quiet potter, but also a spa town. We loved Marcillat, very friendly little market town, easiest to just pop in as its only a few minutes drive from the property. Mont Dore was also well worth a visit as a nice little town in the mountains and also worth taking the cable car up to Puy de Sancy which is the highest point of the Massiv Centrale! We had a fantastic picnic just at the bottom of the Puy de Sancy road in the most gorgeous well tended park below the mountain! Well worth the 2 hour drive! Kids really loved the Lapeyrouse lake for swimming! Perfect for little ones as it starts off very shallow and only about 20 mins drive away!
This was not an area of France that we have been to before, but would definitely like to explore more! We're already working out when we can visit again!
A lot of house for not too much money!
