Banyuls-sur-Mer is a charming Catalan seaside village famous for its excellent wines and steeped in local history. Situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees, it is a superb base for walking with delightful coastal and mountain paths and a short drive to mount Canigou for the more adventurous. There are two markets a week, a moderate sized supermarket, a variety of shops and restaurants and numerous Catalan festivals .There are three beaches and excellent snorkelling and scuba diving, forming part of a marine reserve on the beautiful Vermillion coast. Only six miles from the Spanish border, is easy to explore other villages and sample local cuisine on both sides of the border. An hour from Figueras and Cadaquez, home of Salvador Dali. Five miles from Collioure, haunt of artists such as Matisse and famous for its castle, clock tower and cobbled streets. Twenty miles to Perpignan with its chateau, medieval streets, chic boutiques and restaurants, hypermarkets etc., Good rail links.
