Walking and cycling:
There are many local walks and cycling routes which can be ventured if desired, we have bikes which can be used or you can rent a bike of your liking in Caherviveen.
There is a wonderful walk from the cottage to coomanaspic mountain which is directly behind us from the top there is superb views across to the Glen, the Skelligs Rock and Dingle bay.
From Portmagee village you can walk across the bridge to Valentia Island and up to Bray head where again the views are outstanding. On the way way back you can stop in Portmagee for a deserved pint or meal in the Fishermans bar or the Moorings bar and restaurant. There is also a coffee shop with home-made pastries and cakes etc.
Beaches:
The nearest beach is Reencaragh strand which is 2 miles away this is a secluded beach with shelter from the sea breeze. The other beaches nearby are St Finians Bay which is ideal for surfers. Reenroe beach is a very long sandy beach ideal for walking and horse riding. Children can spend several hours here searching for crabs and sea life among the rock pools. Ballingskelligs beach is a secluded beach ideal for walking, swimming and during the summer months kayaking. It has an old monastery ruin which can be explored, there is also a cafe and toilet facilities available.
Local attractions:
A visit to the Skelligs heritage centre is a must which will give you all the history of Skelligs rock and the monastery. From the village of Portmagee or the Heritage centre a trip to the Skellig Rock can be booked ( not to be missed ) boats leave daily weather permitting.
Valentia Island has various attractions to offer which include the slate quarry with the grotto, the Geokaun mountain and Fogher cliffs viewing point. In the summer there is water sports for children in Knightstown including kayaking and water trampolining. There is a candle making factory where you can make your own scented candles. Throughout the summer there are rowing regatta's which are great entertainment. In St Finians bay there is a chocolate factory and for the history buff's there numerous archaeological sites such as the Staigue fort and Leacanbuile fort.
In the fishing village of Portmagee there are 2 bars with restaurants which frequently have traditional Irish music evenings.
