Charming old Perigourdine stone cottage with pool.
I am writing this for my French neighbours, Annie and Francis. Their romantic hideaway is set in 120 hectares in the heart of the Dordogne countryside. You approach the farm down an 800m drive and arrive at the blue shuttered main house. The cottage is behind and you enter through a simple door, which belies the charming interior of the property. Inside the spacious, light sejour, the tasteful furnishings reflect the fact that he is an artist black smith and she has an antique furniture shop. There is a comfortable sofa and a huge pine coffer and the tables and chairs, as well as the vast chandelier, were made by him. The floors are tiled and mellow and there are exposed beams. There is a separate, well equipped rustic kitchen. With an outdoor pool and sun beds, an evening terrace, lawns, a duck pond, local walks through farmland and woods and two horses that you may ride, it is the perfect place for a summer holiday. As it is centrally heated, it is also very suitable out of season.

The 'Domaine du Rolant' is situated 6 kms from Issigeac, a wonderful medieval village where there is a thriving local market each Sunday. Beaumont (7 Kms) and Montpazier (22 Kms) are ancient bastide towns and an easy day trip takes you up the Dordogne valley to Sarlat. You can also visit many châteaux and historical treasures such as the prehistoric caves in the area. Nearby, the Bergerac vineyards of Montbazillac and Pécharmant are good for wine tasters. The area has many Perigourdine restaurants where you can sample local produce.cepes, pates, duck breast, walnut oil and oysters. Issigeac has five restaurants including a pizzeria, and and you can buy ready cooked meals or succulent ham from the market. All the village markets are wonderful for fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, baskets, jewellery, but for other provisions, Issigeac has butchers, bread shops and patisseries and two small supermarkets. There is a hypermarket twenty minutes away, South of Bergerac for the main shop

Notes to the rental rates
-
Variations to the rental rates.
Outside July and August, the owners offer a reduction if there are only two people staying.
The rental rate only includes sheets and towels if your booking is for two weeks or more. Otherwise, you may bring your own or they can be supplied for one week, at a cost of ten euros per person. Please bring your own swimming towels.
-
The owner requires a security deposit of 30% of the rental rate, paid in euros, to secure the booking. The remainder of the sum is to be paid 6 weeks before the start of the holiday. These sums can only be refunded at the discretion of the owner, so it is recommended that you obtain insurance.
-
On your arrival, the owner asks for a deposit of 800 euros or the equivalent in a pound sterling cheque to cover the cost of damage to the cottage or the property. If you choose to thoroughly clean the gite at the end of the holiday, this waiver will be returned in full; alternatively, the charge for a full end-of-let clean will be 50 euros.

There is plenty of storage space in the walk-in larder. Outside there is a private covered terrace with table and chairs; this faces west and is a peaceful place for evening aperitifs. The mobile BBQ can be used here too. There are deck chairs on the lawn and Donald and Desi, the resident drake and duck, may visit you here! The owner's pool (11m by 5m, chlorinated) and terrace are secluded, safely fenced and gated and surrounded by flowers and shrubs. There will be no other giters sharing this pool, but the owners may use it discreetly, when you are not there. In the pool area there are four of Francis' iron work sunbeds for your use, with cushions supplied. An enclosed shady terrace with seating is perfect for poolside drinks. |
Getting here.
There are regular low cost flights into our little local Bergerac Roumaniere airport which is only 20 minutes away. You can pick up your hire car from there and then there are easy country roads from the airport. This makes your journey relatively stress free. The drive from the Channel ports is long but not usually too crowded. It is possible to do the drive in a day, but a night's stopover makes it much more pleasant. Calais is 890 Kms and can be done in 8.5 hours. Cherbourg is 815 Kms and 8.15 hours away. Caen is 730 Kms and 7.2 hours. Avoid Paris on a Friday and never go through Le Mans when the 24hr race is on in early June!!
Times of arrival and departure
The changeover day is Saturday in the high season. Please note that you are asked to arrive at the gite after 1600 hours and could you be kind enough to let the owner or agent know of your approximate ETA. At the end of your holiday, please could you vacate the property at 1000 hours.
