Elounda - some more info.:
Elounda is quietly becoming a world renowned tourist resort on the coastline of Lassithi, for all the right reasons.
Strict building and forestry guidelines ensure this area has not and will not be spoilt by the overbuilding that has blighted other regions in the past. Less than 2 km from the Villa is the picturesque harbour of Elounda surrounded by shops, taverns and cafes where you can sit and watch the world go by. Tranquility can be be found within the many shaded beaches and crystal blue still waters giving you a magical mix of Cretan charm. Even so you can still find a large number of activities on offer, be it water sports, snorkeling, walking or cycling.
Elounda town is particularly good place to sample that famous Cretan cuisine. A lively bar /restaurant or a quieter taverna by the harbour is your choice.
Travel a short distance by the coastal road with its amazing scenery to Agios Nikolaos and Plaka, two contrasting towns in opposite directions both worthy of a visit.
Plaka, Spinalonga & Agios Nikolaos:
Plaka (6 km) is a charming village with a lovely pebble beach, from where you can observe or visit Spinalonga where the Venetians built a seemingly impregnable castle. On the Spinalonga peninsula is the ancient town of Olous where snorkelers and divers can discover the submerged ruins of an ancient city destroyed by a cataclysmic earthquake.
Agios Nikolaos (9km) is a more vibrant town with its fine array of shops and restaurants. Ask any taxi to take you to 'the Lake in Ag. Nik' , this most charming feature is connected to the sea by a straight channel in its natural surrounding of red rock and trees will attract and mesmerize you. At the small open air theatre by the lake locals & visitors alike can often enjoy musical & dance presentations.
You will find the 'Square' at the centre of town with its memorial surrounded by orange trees, from where in every direction you will find something of interest be it the towns shops, its beach, the Lake or the Marina.
