The surrounding area.:
The area has so much more to offer than just its justifiably famous beaches; the Delta Natural Park is an amazing area renowned for its wildlife - marsh harriers, ospreys, herons, egrets, kingfishers the list goes on and on. There are plenty of opportunities to watch the birds from one of the many bird hides built amongst the rushes. The Delta is a perfect place to explore on foot or bicycle using the many way marked trails of differing lengths. Bike hire is easily available adjacent to a well sited restaurant and ice-cream shop.
The stunningly majestic Els Ports National Park includes Horta San Juan where Picasso painted and is now home to the Picasso museum and near to which is the small town of Gandesa which houses the Spanish Civil War museum. The Battle of the Ebro was one of the most significant battles of the Civil War and the ruined town of Corbera remains a poignant reminder of its destructive force but today the Peace Walk around the area helps to restore a sense of calm
Wine tours.:
For wine lovers the area is rich in opportunities to tour the different wine regions and many of the vineyards offer tours and of course wine tastings. The local agrobotigas are good source for some excellent local wines which are produced in small quantities. The famous Catalan cava is produced closer to Barcelona but still worth a visit, but nearer are the Priorat and Terra Alta regions with vineyards producing traditional as well as new and innovative wines and often housed in the most architecturally amazing Cathedrals of Wine.
For the more energetic there is every opportunity to try sports from kayaking, sailing, paragliding, rock-climbing, horse riding, quad bike trailing, cycling and walking - even a midnight, moonlit walk across the mountains in August! Not forgetting fishing, the Ebro is famous for its fish, especially its enormous catfish, but you do need a licence for this.
Sightseeing.:
For something different, spend a day sightseeing and shopping in Barcelona or Valencia, both easily reached by train from l'Ampolla station, or by car. For the young, or young at heart, Port Aventura and the adjacent Aqua Parc is also very easily reached by train (it has its own station) or car, but in the height of summer it is perhaps better to visit later in the day or evening for a cooler experience.
Other Activities:
Snorkelling, boat hire, bird-watching, sunbathing.
