Situated in the sunniest area of Madeira on the south coast, Arco da Calheta sits above the coastal village of Calheta with easy connections to the airport and Funchal. Calheta is just 2 kilometres away and has the island’s only sandy beach and with other nearby coastal villages is a great place for sea activities, big game fishing, whale watching and wind surfing. There are also many restaurants and a large supermarket.   • As an option for large groups downstairs has 2 double bedrooms and a bathroom. The larger bedroom has a king-size bed.and ample space to store your clothes. A baby cot, bouncer and travel cot are kept here. A ceiling fan keeps the room comfortable when the temperature is hot and 2 French doors open onto the front terrace. The second downstairs bedroom is smaller with a smaller size double bed, fitted wardrobe and a ceiling fan. Both these bedrooms share the original but fully modernised bathroom with the original tiled floor and bath but with new toilet, bidet and shower fittings. A door leads out from the bathroom onto the south facing terrace. Upstairs has two double bedrooms sharing a bathroom Both bedrooms have access to the east facing terrace.

kitchen: Large kitchen and dining area converted from the original shop and still retaining the shop counter and cupboards. The kitchen is fully equipped for those who enjoy cooking and entertaining at home with the opportunity to experiment using exotic fruits from the garden. The refectory table seats 8 people.

The upstairs: The pretty hallway with original parquet floor and original painted walls in pastel colours leads the length of the house opening onto a terrace either end. The main bathroom with parquet floor and central bath with shower attachment toilet and bidet is half tiled with local tiles. The two double bedrooms decorated in pastel shades each have two windows – one each opening onto the east-facing terrace. One bedroom has a 140/190cms double bed and hanging space for clothes. Both bedrooms have ceiling fans. The second bedroom is “pink” with the second window looking out over the garden and hills. A 160/200cms double bed in this room comes with hanging space for clothes, colourful bed linen and summer and winter duvets for all bedrooms are provided. Towels (but not beach towels) extra pillows and bed linen are also provided for guests.

The upstairs terraces : The upstairs terraces are reached via the house or an exterior staircase. Find locally commissioned sun-loungers, table and chairs so you can enjoy breakfast in the morning sun or just a relaxing read, or spend your time gazing out to sea. Part shaded by the vines, part exposed to direct sun, you can idle the hours away here in comfort. Outside the west-facing terrace also has an exterior staircase leading from the upstairs hallway down to the main terrace. An original Portuguese seating bench, a dining table and chairs offer “al fresco” eating under the grape-vines. The original outside cookhouse has been converted into a BBQ room with the original outside stone sinks.

A very relaxing stay

We had a lovely time staying at the old post office, it's a charming and stylish character property with the additional modern trappings one might hope for whilst relaxing abroad. Luxuriant bathroom, TV room with large DVD collection for a cosy film night, study area, roof terraces with calming views, BBQ house for cooking and eating alfresco, and a great fun kitchen to cook in if you want to eat indoors beside the genuine original shop counter now dividing the kitchen / diner. In addition of course there was a lovely garden with a large variety of fruits and flowers, many of which I was not familiar with but enjoyed studying nevertheless.
The surrounding area was also a pleasant surprise, and the house provided a good base from which to pootle off and explore nearby villages and towns, also luckily with the islands only two sandy beaches a couple of mins roll downhill in the car, we always had an option to swim in the sea or eat at the local marina for lunch or dinner if we fancied it.

We have subsequently recommended the house to two sets of friends both of which told us they had a great time, one colleague of mine stayed for the second week of his honeymoon after staying in a luxury hotel in Funchal and said he had a great time with the BBQ hut and it made their trip.

We are planning on returning next year to the Island with some friends and would be more than happy to stay at the old post office again.

Between street and garden...

The "old post office"is a nice house very well renoved,decored in part with old charming furnitures, but ,of course, the post office of a village is rarely lost in the country ,and at Arco de calheta this house is situed side one of the mains streets of the village and today the trafic is too intensive for me and my idea of a holiday's house ....If it's not a problem for you ,rent this house !

We enjoyed so much our first stay in this house that we came back again in winter.
We have very good feelings and vibrations in this place. It is very pleasant for just a couple to have so much space...!
Having breakfast on the terrace upstairs when the sun rise up the mountain at 9 o'clock in december is so peacefull.
The house is very well decorated,colorfull, confortable, and anything is provided.
I hope tocome again with friends.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay....

We found the old post office extremely comfortable and with beautiful surroundings. The three terraces offer space to eat, read and simply relax while overlooking the lush gardens which are well maintained and thick with flowers, plants and fruit. Follow the path to the rear of the property and you are lead through a stunning banana plantation which takes you to a pretty decked seating area where we spent many long lazy afternoons in the sun. Inside, the house is very colourful and tastefully decorated. It is also felt comfortably cool when the sun is baking outside. In the kitchen/diner, the old glass post office counter remains which has been well looked after and really gives a sense of warmth and history. We found the neighbours to be friendly in the village and the short trip to the sea a beautiful and picturesque walk. The nearby mariner has some really good eateries as well as two safe beaches for the kids to enjoy.
Overall we loved our stay here and recommend this charming house, we'll certainly be returning next year.

We loved this charachterful house - beautifully converted from it's former role as a post office. Lots of old features remain alongside colourful, traditional and stylish decor. We spent easy mornings breakfasting on fruit from the lush garden, walking during the day along Madeira's fantastic levedas and whiled away the afternoons in the secluded garden suntrap surrounded by banana trees. There was a fiesta in the village on our first day - and we felt welcomed by the locals throughout our week's stay. Arco de Calheta has great little local cafes and an excellent fruitaria with local produce. We also really enjoyed the new Italian restaurant in Loreta just up the road. Thanks to Edward and Karen for going out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed for our holiday.
