Nice in Nice, but.....
Review Submitted: August 18, 2009
Date of Stay: August 2009
Nice apartment, very well equipped. Noisy square but sound-proof windows. Well-functioning air-conditioning. 4th floor with very steep stairs (good exercise). There is sometimes a nasty smell from the bathroom, keep the door shut.
BUT: Our start was a disaster. We were not met by the agent as agreed in Place Rossetti. We stood with our luggage at the cathedral gates for two and a half hours in the heat. We phoned the numbers we had been given every 15 minutes, but always got the answering machine. Left massages and read out our phone number in case it did not show up in the display. Talked to the police, to a well-meaning local, and to an agent for another agency. There was nothing they could do, and there is no office address, only the phone numbers. Then we started to look for a hotel. All were full, August in NIce! A receptionist at one of the hotels tried the agent's number, and AH! our "contact" called her back! We did not get to speak to him, but were told to go back to the cathedral gates and meet somebody there. Then, three and a half hours after the agreed time, we were let into the apartment.
You can imagine the stress we suffered. It is good we have no heart condition. We also thought we had been fooled. And, never once during the stay, or now after, have we heard a word from the agent or anybody else. The story we were given as an explanation (by the man who finally met us) was wild enough to be true, but I am not willing to excuse the fact that we were not contacted while we were standing there.
Owner's Response: In summary, this guest (out of many many other guests) was unfortunate enough to be met 2 hours later than was arranged because of the theft of the agents car whilst on a short trip to Italy. The car contained, phones and money in a seperately locked boot therefore contact was not possible but a substitute was sent to meet and explain the situation. I am pleased to say that the guest does not have a "heart condition", nor was she "duped", and the stairs were "fully explained" before she paid any money. Her arrival to a beautiful square in the central of a lively part of of the Old Town of Nice is where it is known not to be a quiet back water. But, in fact, she states she did not suffer from noise due to the double glazed windows which could be closed due to the efficient air conditioning unit. If one eliminates all the "possible" negatives, then this review is "positive" because none of the negatives actually happened, save for the one-off and unavoidable delayed meeting. The smart and fully-equipped apartment was clearly beyond the criticism of someone who was genuinely upset, and so the agent can only apologise for being unable to change the course of history.
