Further details for this holiday villa rental in Macerata, Italy

About the Area: The hilltop village of Colmurano is the ideal base for a relaxing but interesting holiday with so many diverse places to visit nearby. Colmurano itself holds many festivals in the summer months the largest of which is the music extravaganza, (Pizzagra/Artistrada) drawing people from all over Italy. Many historic towns and villages are easily reached. The Roman ruins of Urbs Salvia are only a five minute drive away, and its local restaurant 'Le Logge' a must for lunch or dinner! San Ginesio, again close by, is host to the 'Palio' where the towns four local districts compete against each other in a jousting competition where they re-enact the storming of the main gates. Civitanova beach is 25 mins away and is home to a huge Saturday market, other beaches, Porto San Giorgio and Porto Saint'Elpido, are a little further down the coast. A trip into the mountains via Sarnano (thermal spa town) will take you up to the beautiful turquoise lake 'Fiastra' and Sibillini National Park.

Things to do: Every weekend in the summer all the villages hold festivals celebrating the food and wines of the region. Our local village, Colmurano boasts (among others) a music festival featuring many types of bands and groups, and a two day go-cart extravaganza with races on the local roads! In the winter we have a chocolate festival. Most of the local villages have a market day providing plenty of chances to stock up on local cheeses and meats and in the case of Civitanova market ,shoes and handbags! There are plenty of small theatres nearby with many and diverse productions, and a little further afield ,Macerata hosts the world famous opera festival in July/August. Also in those months Urbisaglia hosts a classic drama season in the Roman amphitheatre. If you prefer to shop there are many tempting designer outlets nearby! However, if you want a quiet restful holiday then this is the perfect place to chill out, relax, and enjoy the views!

The Sibillini mountains are nearby and provide a wealth of walking or cycling opportunities! In the spring there are carpets of wild flowers, orchids and helebores etc. Later on, if you are lucky, you will see clouds of butterflies in their thousands, a truly incredible sight. There are many paths if you want to explore, with amazing views in all directions and plenty of photo opportunities. The water fountains that you see in the mountains and in the local villages provides water from natural springs and is pure and clean. You will frequently see the locals filling bottles to use for drinking water, mostly because it pure, but also because its free! So, feel free to help yourself on your travels! For those of you who like the wild life, you will frequently see birds of prey and sometimes wild boar. The countryside is ever changing depending on the crops being grown, but there are allways many fields of sun flowers, a truly amazing sight.

Golf: Conero golf club (Sirolo) is an hours drive away and offer a tournament standard course. Golf clubs can be hired for the day.

A holiday to remember

We stayed in the villa for almost three weeks having originally booked for two weeks. We have three children aged 13,15 and 17 and had a visit from my niece and nephew aged 6 and 9. The villa has fantastic views and the pool area is safely fenced off so no toddlers or children can escape into the pool unless they are supervised. The villa was very clean and tidy and was cleaned on a weekly basis. We often walked up into Colmurano for an evening pizza or an ice cream. The owners are nearby to help if you have any questions but are never intrusive; on the contrary they are very friendly and welcoming. The nearby towns are beautiful and well worth a visit. We did not do much sightseeing and spent the first two weeks just relaxing and sitting in little towns having coffee, but there is so much that you can do in this region if you want to. We did take a drive the nearby lake Fiastra which is absolutely stunning with crystal clear water. I must say that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

travelling with a young family is not easy

Review Submitted: August 5, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
I'm a single Dad with two small boys (3 and 1) and we came to the villa along with an assortment of friends and my nanny, for a month in july 2008. Plenty of time to get to know the house and the area.

The house is as described - large, light and airy. Great views and a lovely pool, safely away from the house with a fence around it.

Colmurano is an amazing place - a tiny hill town with loads going on, at least during the summer - street festivals, vintage motor bike rally, ourdoor concerts, theatre, and really friendly , welcoming people. Not many shops - a chemist, veg shop, butchers and a couple of bars - but enough for day to day needs.

The house was about 10 / 15 minutes walk up a hill to the town - a bit of a hike with two buggies and along a narrow country road with no pavement - beware of carzy drivers.

The house itself was just finished when we rented it and there were still snagging issues and some areas were not yet finished (like the garden) and some were potentially dangerous (gas leaked into the kitchen on a few occasions) but the owners were keen to sort out issues since they were living in a caravan immediately next door whilst we were there.

My main comment about this property is that I had some reservations about its suitability for young children - the top floor is accessible up a precarious tiled stairway with very uneven stairs and no stair gate on any of the stairs. All the floors are hard tiled floors (which is no surprise for this part of the world) but it meant lots of bumps and bruises for the little ones. There were no cupboard locks (ok, maybe I'm expecting too much here) and my three year old incurred a very bloody head injury falling out of bed against a sharp metal radiator.

However, the property was safe (for me and the kids) in respect of access to the pool and outdoors and was in a great location half way between the mountains and the coast.
Owner's Response: Renovating a property in rural Italy can have its problems. Work started on the house in September 2007 and continued untill the last minute, there were a few little things not quite finished.
This house, built in 1920, was not subject to planning regulations and therefore retains some quirky features which local planning will not allow us to change e.g. The staircase.
The childrens beds were safely away from any radiators but the injury occured when the child slept in another room.We tried to deal with any problems immediatly,e.g. investigate the gas leak,(there was none) Part of the charm of this area is that it is a real farming community and surrounded by mostly un-madeup roads, sorry no pavements! We endeavour improve the property and its safety and welcome many more families.
