Coast/Beach:
Tavira Island is the livelier of a selection of beautiful beaches in the area. Reached by small ferry boats and aqua taxis that travel up the Gilao river, dotted with many colourful and traditional fishing boats and yachts. The island has a good choice of restaurants and bars. It is more than a day on the beach it is an experience not to be missed. Quieter less populated beaches can be reached by car, miniature train and on foot, all belonging to the Ria Formosa nature reserve.
Travel:
30km/30 minutes from Faro airport. Car hire is not essential. Tavira has all the amenities and a vast choice in good restaurants, bars and pavement cafes. Divided by a small river crossed by pedestrian and Roman bridges. Tavira remains an authentic and charming tapestry of old and new.
You are in the heart of Tavira's west bank of the river with charming bars and restaurants, coming to life at night with excellent cuisine at the pavement restaurants. To the east are churches, and a castle. Choice of 6 supermarkets supply ample fresh produce, with the local fish, meat and vegetable market not to be missed. Traditional working fishing villages boast excellent fish restaurants bordering Tavira. The location is superb. The beaches are amazing.
