One bedroom apartment in Alghero Old Town
This ground floor apartment is situated in the romantic heart of Alghero's historic Old Town with all amenities, bars, restaurants, the market, shopping, the theatre, etc very close by. The famous Bastioni sea wall is less than 100m away and the harbour, marina and beach only 5 to 10 minutes on foot. Alghero is home to many artists - one of them has even decorated the apartment with some murals. The apartment consists of a double bedroom, bathroom with shower, and kitchen/living room. Newly refurnished with a kingsize bed, two sofabeds, large LCD TV, DVD player, microwave, washing machine, fridge freezer, and free use of some infant and beach equipment, as well as wireless or USB broadband. This well-equipped apartment is ideal for city or beach breaks or as a base for exploring the island. Best suited for a couple, but can sleep up to five at a stretch.

The fine Alghero architecture is Catalan and worth the trip alone. Historical ruins, nature reserves, pristine beaches and quaint villages are close by and if you love spectacular vistas of mountain and sea, you will find them here. If you are feeling energetic, explore the spectacular Neptune’s Grotto in the morning, then stop off at a Nuraghe necropolis on your way to lunch at a nearby artichoke festival; then spend the afternoon swimming in clear emerald waters before heading for an aperitif in the old harbour; then finish off the day by tucking into delicious seafood, or authentic Sardinian suckling pig, or just grab a pizza. Unless you prefer a more leisurely pace: shop at the local market, stroll through the Old Town admiring the architecture, then wander off to the beach for a swim before heading home for a home-cooked meal; finally, promenade along the sea wall like a local and grab some home-made Italian ice cream the likes of which you will not find elsewhere.

Sardinia and Alghero history
While Sardinia was settled about 6000 years ago (archaeological sites are everywhere), Alghero was founded in 1102 AD by the Genovese and remained under Doria control for centuries. After that the Catalan-Aragonese took over in 1353, and Alghero stayed under Catalan/Spanish control until the 18th Century, in the period acquiring its distinct ‘gotic’ architecture and Catalan feel. Street names are still in Catalan and Italian, and along with Italian and Sardinian, which is a language quite close to Latin, Catalan is still spoken in Alghero. This unique blend of Italian and Catalan is reflected not just in the Alghero architecture, but also in its cuisine and cultural practices.
