Luxury Villa on the north coast of Crete overlooking Souda Bay. TRIA AVGA is an elegant, architect-designed property built five years ago and is situated just beneath the village of Kokkino Chorio near Hania. Set in an acre of garden amongst olive trees with panoramic sea views, the house is reached by a private driveway. At the front of the property there is a wide terrace shaded by a vine and bougainvillea from where you can watch the ships out in the bay, listen to the birds, and, in the evening, enjoy the sun setting over the Rodopoi peninsula. There is a 50 square meter illuminated swimming pool with fence and lockable gate, but also many good child friendly beaches within easy reach. The Villa is very well equipped combining comfortable traditional Cretan furniture with a modern Italian kitchen, a generous supply of contemporary bathrooms and plenty of hanging space in the wardrobes. Well-suited to an extended family group or a party of friends.

Tria Avga is within easy reach of beautiful beaches, but is in a peaceful location at the end of a peninsula overlooking Souda Bay.The beautiful Venetian city of Hania is only 20 minutes away and offers a number of museums, walks around the old walls, excellent eating and a wide range of speciality shops. Don't miss the war graves at the Souda cemetery. On your way back you can pick up fresh fish from the two fishmongers in Souda. Rethymnon, is also worth a visit for its historic centre, beaches and tavernas serving local specialities. All the local villages of Vamos, Plaka, Gavalohori, Almerida and Kalives have attractions to offer including night life and sporting activities. The local taverna in Kokkino Horio usually has live music and frequently Cretan dancing on Saturday nights. The Kokkino Horio glass factory is the major local employer and has some wonderful displays of its glass - a good place for completely original presents. They also do glass-blowing demonstrations.

  • All bathrooms are newly fitted, functional and efficient with mirror cupboards, good lighting, hanging hooks and towel rails. There are spectacular views of the White Mountains from three of the bathrooms. Outside shower by swimming pool.

  • All bedrooms have sea views and four of them have balconies or terraces you can sit out on. Air conditioning is provided in all bedrooms or, if you prefer, there are three fans available. The beds are comfortable and locally made with traditional bird carvings on the headboards. The master bedroom is the biggest and there is plenty of room for a baby in a travel cot, if required. This and the ground floor bedroom have en suite bathrooms, but there are two additional bathrooms as well as a cloakroom, so there is never any pressure on facilities. Mosquito netting is provided in all bedrooms in case there are mosquitoes about. There is also air conditioning in every bedroom. There is plenty of wardrobe space and drawers in each bedroom.

Notes: Steep gradient for wheelchair ramp. Strong carer required to push up to house level. Ground floor bedroom suitable for elderly or infirm. Help with steps to lower terrace and pool needed. The pool is surrounded by a fence with a gate for which we provide a padlock and chain. All guests use the swimming pool at their own risk and children must be supervised at all times. There are two gas rings and two electric hobs. There is a large electric oven with grill facility and lots of equipment for mixing, liquidising and juice extracting including a toaster. There is a quantity of saucepans and baking tins should you feel the need to make a birthday cake. In the store room there are six sunbeds, a large umbrella for use at the house, some beach umbrellas and very many inflatables and a pump. Because of its high winter rainfall Crete always has on offer plenty of fresh local salad and vegetables and food shopping is a real pleasure.

Language: Many visitors worry whether they will be able to communicate in Crete, but English is the first foreign language for most Greeks. In this part of the island we have encountered some German speaking Cretans also and in other areas French speakers. Although there is a local dialect we do not begin to understand it, but we note that Greek here has a distinctive local accent. Any attempt to speak Greek is gratefully received and it is particularly nice to be able to speak to the over 70's in their own language. There are phrasebooks and a dictionary at the Villa. To anticipate any difficulties we often make shopping lists in two languages. If you require an interpreter, for instance to report a loss to the police, we have found all pharmacists seem to speak very good English.

Tria Avga is a spacious, comfortable, stylish house. It's secluded enough for those who value privacy on holiday, it's a good base from which to explore and enjoy Western Crete, and if you're not into exploring it has a handsome terrace from which to enjoy the glorious position overlooking Souda Bay. Nearby we visited some charming villages, ate in excellent tavernas, and found good beaches. We also found magnificent walking (early/mid June) in the hills and mountains inland.

Heart-warming Spring Holiday in Kokkino Chorio

Spring Holiday in Tria Avga
We stayed in Tria Avga about ten months ago and found the house to be extremely well-equipped, comfortable and easy to manage. The property was clean and very well-maintained. The description regarding the lay-out, distance to the sea and distance to the villages was all accurate. We enjoyed the garden and swimming pool even in February. The drive from the airport at Hania was about three quarters of an hour and we particularly enjoyed visiting Hania during our stay. We also liked going inland and visiting the waterfalls. Another must is the museum at Hania and, of course, Knossos.
We look forward to another visit later in the year.

Great Mediterranean Holiday

Tria Avga proved a fabulous choice for a too short holiday for us - a mature Australian couple.

The modern house is spacious and well appointed and immaculately presented with comfortable beds, numerous bathrooms and plenty of space which is well designed to take advantage of the breezes and provide a good balance of inside and outside areas for eating, reading and generally lounging around.

The pool is a good size for those crazy enough to do 'laps' while on holidays, and also welcoming for those who just wish to float away their troubles. The beach at Almirida is great for swimming in the Med, as is the 'cave and cove' onto Souda Bay a little to the east of the house if you can get directions or a local to guide you there.

Excellent kitchen came into play for preparing lazy breakfasts and dinners of local lamb and vegetables washed down with Cretan red wine and a glass or two of raki - purely as an aid to digestion.

For those who wish to 'dine out' there is plenty of choice a short drive away and we enjoyed the beachside strip in Almirida, the 'local' taverna at Kokkino Horio (where much of Zorba the Greek was filmed in 1964). We also recommend the taverna at Vamos which is a bit further afield but well worth the drive, either for lunch, or dinner, particularly if you go on a night when the 'band' is playing their local tunes and songs.

Tria Avga is an ideal base for exploring some of the incredible range of historical sites which Crete has to offer and we enjoyed day trips to Chania, Rethmyno, Iraklion and Knossos and wished we had a month instead of the week as everything we visited led to an addition to the 'must re-visit list'.

We would definitely return, next time for a longer period.

Springtime delight

My wife and I met up with old friends at this delightful holiday home. The description fits well...and the beds are really comfortable! The flowers and blossom in spring are exceptionally beautiful, and there are excellent walks within an easy drive away...some over paths which are many centuries old, and through exhilarating scenery, (maps available in the house) but you will need good walking boots and long trousers to avoid getting scratched. The local beach is a good 10 minutes walk and quite small, but there are several more remote and beautiful coves nearby which are accessible by car. We ate at home mostly, and the local shops seem to have everything you need, with everyone being very friendly. an excellent base from which to tour the island.

Fabulous!

I had a very relaxing stay with my husband and children in this well-appointed villa in early 2008. Spacious reception rooms and patio areas facilitated much merriment. A kitchen with every possible appliance and utensil allowed me to cook up some delectable greek specialities, and the bedrooms were clean and fresh. Highly recommended to families and groups looking for sun, a breath-taking setting, good restaurants and a wee bit of culture.
