Cascais is a beautiful town to visit. There are numerous beaches in Cascais all close to the town centre and no shortage of quality restaurants and cafes. Cascais has a large marina and a beautiful lush park. Other delightful beaches are nearby (Guincho, Carcavelos, and Praia Grande etc). Excellent facilities exist for sailing, windsurfing, bodyboarding, diving and water skiing. The golf courses of Oitavus, Quinta do Marinha, Estoril, Penha Longa and Beloura are all within a few minutes drive. The British romantic poet Lord Byron called Sintra a “glorious eden”; his adulation made Sintra a chic destination for 19th century aristocrats and ladies. These days Sintra retains its magic with its fairytale castles and romantic mountain panoramas. The old town is full of villas with flowering gardens crowned by 3 castles Paco Real, Palacio National da Pena and the Castelo dos Mouros. Estoril boasts Europe’s largest casino, which has an agenda of excellent shows.

Local activities surfing, fishing, water skiing, diving, swimming, tennis, walking, sailing, cycling, horse riding, golf, wind-surfing, mountain biking, mountaineering

Portuguese cuisine

The delights of Portuguese cuisine have been influenced over the years by Europe, North Africa and the East where, in the XVI century, the Portuguese brought back a great variety of spices. Restaurants exist for all tastes, which ever you choose, the hospitality is unequalled. Simple fare includes grilled sardines with pimentos and boiled potatoes washed down with a mature red wine in a local tavern. While if you want something a little more luxurious, you can always choose a restaurant. Local specialities on the Estoril Coast are fish and shellfish - all well worth trying. Some dishes also worth trying are - fish stew, grilled robalo, sole, dried codfish, shell fish rice, grilled lobster, stuffed crab, etc. Not to be missed are the exquisite pastries and desserts served in local padarias (bakery's)- try the world famous pastel de nata (custard like tarts), quesadas (almond speciality cake). Portugal has some impressive wines to offer particularly those from the Douro and Atlentejo

Sport- riding / tennis / racing / karting

There are several riding schools in the area where horses can be hired and riding lessons available and many excellent riding tracks through the woods. The Region has many tennis clubs and courts, some of them a very high standard. The Estoril Open is a regular PTA fixture and takes place at Janor in March/April each year. The world's best clay court players come to participate in the tournament. The Estoril Tennis Club has 18 courts with excellent facilities including floodlighting for play at night. The Estoril Race Track is a well established venue on the Formula 1 circuit. Many car and motor bike racing events are held here. Car and motor bike racing can also be practised here on an individual basis. Karting - Contra-Curva is one of the largest indoor karting tracks in Europe. It is in Abóboda, near Carcavelos, and can be reached from the Carcavelos/Abóboda exit off Lisbon-Cascais motorway.

Sport -flying / adventure sports / water sports

Flying - There is a flying school at the Tires aerodrome. Light planes and helicopters can be hired, with or without a pilot. Adventure Sports - Throughout the region there are excellent natural conditions for a wide range of adventure sports. There are clubs and companies specialising in mountaineering, hiking, mountain biking, orienteering, obstacle racing, paragliding, hang-gliding, parachuting, micro-lighting and other sports. Information can be obtained from tourist offices. Fishing - There are over seventy officially recognised places for fishing along the coast from Cascais to Guincho, where you can catch many different varieties of fish and shellfish. Water Sports - Cascais Marina, the Cascais Sailing Club situated on the bay, has facilities for all water sports and important international competitions are organised from here. There is a sailing school at weekends, yachts and motor boats for hire and water skiing instruction.

Golf Information:

The Estoril Coast has 7 golf courses, all with individual characteristics. Estoril, there is a superb panoramic view from the course towards the sea. The course itself is set among fragrant pine and mimosa trees. There are two courses, one with par 69, designed by Mckenzie Ross. The second course has 9 holes and par 34. Estoril Sol, the course is a 9 hole par 33 - designed by John Harris and Ron Fream and is a great test for the players skill. Penha Longa, the 18 hole, 72 par, 6.228 m long course was designed by Robert Trent Jones. In 1995 Penha Longa inaugurated a new nine hole course - Mosteiro. Quinta da Beloura, the golf course is of classic style with two par 3, two par 5 and five par 4 in each nine holes making a par total of 72. Quinta da Marinha, the course - 18 holes, par 72, 6.112 m long - is probably one of the best designed by Robert Trent Jones. Oitavos Golf is also set inside Quinta da Marinha.
