Strontian is a highland village some 23 miles from Fortwilliam. Sitting at the head of Loch Sunart a 40 mile long sea loch , Strontian is easily one of the most scenic areas in the U.K. Mingulay is only a short walk along the Loch Sunarts shore to the modern village centre, there you will find all the amenities you will need for your stay, a post office, pub, hotels with dining, fully licensed convenience store, pottery and cafe. Strontian sits on the doorstep of the magnificent Ardnamurchan peninsula one of the last remaining truly unspoilt regions of the U.K. Magnificent seascapes, moorland, sandy beaches and finally Ardnamurchan lighthouse standing at the most westerly point on the U.K mainland, a breathtaking tour not to be missed. At the heart of the highlands Strontian provides an excellent touring centre, Mull, Skye, Loch Ness, Oban and many more are all accessible in a day. A truly unique location...........

Wonderful, comfortable base with a great view

DaveD Bristol, England
Review Submitted: August 17, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We found Carol's directions were very accurate and easy to follow, and received a warm welcome when we arrived after a leisurely 3 hour drive from Glasgow Airport.

The lodge was large, warm and comfortable, and it was a lovely touch not to have to worry about finding basic essentials when we arrived - milk, bread, bacon, eggs, juice tea, sugar were all waiting for us in the well-equipped kitchen.

The living area is large and cosy, with a wonderful picture window looking out across the loch. Mingulay (and Jura next door) are among the highest lodges on the hillside, so the views are cracking.

Bedrooms were cosy and the beds very comfortable, and it was so dark and so quiet that we all slept like logs.

Bathroom has all mod cons and was clean and well-appointed.

Strontian is a small, welcoming village, with shops, pub/hotel and post office/general store all within easy walking distance from the lodge. A little further afield there are various other places to eat (again reachable on foot) and it is ideally located for exploring the islands (especially Mull), the peninsula and the Great Glen. Fort William (and Ben Nevis, Glen Nevis) is only 35 minutes away.

We all had a wonderful time here - and next time we visit the Highlands we'll certainly be making a return visit to Strontian and to Mingulay!
Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the review Dave, I am glad you found Mingulay so comfortable for your highland break, this review shows what a wonderful base Strontian is to explore the west coast with Mingulay offering access to the islands and local amenities with the bonus of a wonderful view to wake up to. I am glad to see they plan to return repeat custom is the ultimate compliment for self catering owners

Perfection

Stevenann St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
Review Submitted: July 20, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We stayed at the related cottage, Jura, for a week to celebrate our ananiversary in the romantic Highlands, and it was perfect. Stunning view, charming village with all necessities available close by (fuel, groceries, cafe, library with internet access, etc., great scenic walks). The proprietor was encyclopedic in her knowledge of the area and attractions, most amiable and helpful. Clued us into a great restaurant nearby. The property was clean, comfortable, nicely decorated. We couldn't have found a better spot. We loved it.
Owner's Response: Thanks for the lovely review, a pleasure to have you with me and I am glad you had a good anniversary in such a beautiful place. You and Steve will be among my most memorable guests

Well worth the long drive

ianboz Walsall, West Midlands, England
Review Submitted: June 28, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
It's a fair drive from the West Midlands to Strontian - having done it before, I knew that a break would be good, so we stopped of at Moffat. That meant a gentle drive to Strontian on he Saturday, arriving bang on 3 p.m. as our new 32-inch colour TV was being tested.

After a few busy weeks in the office, and the best part of 2 days driving, it was amazing how fast the beautiful setting, the bird song, the views over the loch, the cup of tea restored my spirits.

This place has a magical quality - even the "wasteland" where rhododendrons had recently been cleared did nothing to spoil our experience. I even spent a day in bed, having got a mystery illness that showed up about 2 hours after arrival, but as I said to another holidaymaker, I would rather be ill there than anywhere else! (I was able to see the local doctor on the same day, and was much restored within a short time.)

We love this area, and would certainly think very seriously about staying here again - there's so much to do, (or not to do, if you just want to relax). We particularly enjoyed watching a variety of birds eating the bread and jam we'd put out for pine martens (which we didn't see).
Owner's Response: Thank you for the review Ian it was a pleasure to have met you and your family.

The TV is working well so far with a high def box on the way to compliment it, the " wasteland" is greening over a bit but it will take a few years as they are a very determined plant, unforunately the price we pay in the highlands to remove the hated Rhodie, better that that 25 ft of them blocking the sparkling waters of Loch Sunart. I am pleased you love this area I know I couldn't live any where else after being lucky enough to find this hidden gem

I do hope you decide to visit again we are enjoying the sort of weather you had at the moment it is sooo hot !!
