The Barn and the Farmhouse at Grangeneuve are far enough apart for privacy, do not overlook each other's pools but are also close enough for large parties who may wish to rent both gites. The Barn has many large windows to take advantage of the wonderful summer sun and the beautiful views over the fields of sunflowers and wooded hills. Original timbers are on display in both houses and their terraces are surrounded by roses and lavender bushes. The Farmhouse has both a terrace and a walled courtyard, both buildings have kitchens designed as the heart of the home where the cook is always part of the party and small children can be entertained safely. There is plenty of shade with several magnificent trees and we have encouraged the birds to nest here. Within 150 yards you may see foxes, deer, badgers and hares. There is little traffic as the property is at the end of the tarmac road. The fenced garden gives added safety for children. The barn pool has a Roman step.

The Barn has a large open plan living room/dining area/kitchen on the first floor with large windows looking out over the views, pool and garden.There is a false balcony with french windows, a woodburning stove, new floor, pictures, books, handmade oriental rugs and usual kitchen amenities. The ceiling is open up to the pine lined roof and all the original beams are on display. There are three bedrooms on this floor, two with false balconies and french windows giving onto views of sunflowers and wooded hills. There is a bathroom with shower stall on this floor. The Van Gogh bedroom is on the ground floor and looks out onto the terrace and the garden through rose lined french doors. There is a large hallway, large bathroom with separate shower stall and a utility room (washing machine, sink and cupboards). One side of the ground floor still has the original oak mangers on display. Two sides are covered with climbing roses and kiwi vines and there are lavender bushes.

Sited just below the village of Lusignac with its walled manoir, Grangeneuve is to be found halfway down a gentle hill at the end of the access road. We look out over fields of sunflowers and wooded hills. Halfway between 2 villages (10 mins walk), each with bar/restaurant, this is a Michelin rated area of outstanding beauty. It is a tranquil and restful spot but within quick and easy reach of activity centres. Great area for walking, cycling, canoeing and or lazying about and for bar concerts in the summer. There are small towns, Verteillac and St. Severin, within 5 minutes with baker's, butcher's, post office and bank, whilst Riberac with its large supermarkets, wonderful Friday morning market, and the River Dronne is 12 min away. There are several chateaux in the area and, of course, plenty of good restaurants and bars. Wild deer are to be seen in the fields around the property and many birds including woodpeckers, hoopoes and several kinds of hawk.

  • Payment and Security Deposit: A non-refundable deposit of 25 per cent is required on booking with the balance payable 2 calendar months before the start of the rental period. There is a £400 security deposit which is refundable one week after vacation upon confirmation that property has been left in a clean and undamaged condition. This should be paid at the latest a week before your arrival. If paid by cheque it should be paid together with the blance of the rental as it takes 2 months for cheques to clear completely. You are advised to take out holiday insurance to cover the possibility of cancellation as neither the deposit nor the 75 per cent balance will be reimbursed.
  • Rental rates are for the whole barn for up to 9 people (including one baby in cot) for seven nights and six days unless otherwise specified. Prices are inclusive of electricity, gas, towels and sheets. However, we do ask you to bring your own swimming towels. During the cold season there is an extra charge of £40 per week to cover firewood and electric or paraffin heaters. We are happy to discuss rates for longer out of season stays, please ask.

  • Both bathrooms have views over the countryside through large windows. Downstairs bathroom has a bath with shower for washing hair or small children in the bath, a separate roomy shower stall with tiled bench, wash basin and loo. The original mangers run alongside the bath and the washbasin is decorated with seashells from the whale-watching town of Hermanus. With the pale terracotta floor tiles and the dark mangers, this is a pretty room. The upstairs bathroom has a shower stall, wash basin and loo and has a blue floor.

  • The Van Gogh bedroom has a double bed with a mosquito net canopy, and its colour scheme is green with terracotta floor tiles. There are french windows and another large window looking out on the terrace. It has Victorian wardrobe and handmade oriental rug. There are, of course, Van Gogh reproductions on the walls and the room looks out onto the irises in the garden. The Blue and Turquoise Bedrooms on the first floor look out of their french windows over the fields and hills. One of the beds in the Turquoise Room can be turned around to give railings for a toddler. This room is decorated with child friendly material. All rooms have a computer desk. There is a fold up bed in the hall and there is a cot available. All rooms have mosquito nets and anti-mosquito diffusers and all beds have anti-mite mattress covers.

Notes: The pool is of course fenced and alarmed to French standards. The following are provided in addition to towels, bed linen and duvets: a fan in each bedroom and one in the kitchen, dishwasher tablets, basic condiments and spices, basic cleaning materials, tea towels and mosquito nets. PLEASE PROVIDE YOUR OWN SWIMMING TOWELS. The property is cleaned at the beginning of your stay. There is a House Book giving detailed information on all necessary matters together with a large selection of tourist material. The garden is completely fenced in addition to the fencing round the swimming pool. Baby sitting is provided free one night a week on request. The washing machine etc is in a separate laundry with sink and extra storage space for keeping dangerous chemicals away from children. You may use my computer in emergency but there is a good broadband service (unsecured) at the cafe 20 mins walk away (5 mins by car).

Places to visit and things to do: Royan and other seaside towns with their sandy beaches and nearby oyster beds are 1 1/2 hrs away. The sand dunes of Archachon, south of Bordeaux, are approximately 2 hrs drive whilst La Rochelle (famous for its seige of the Huguenots) is about 2 1/2 hrs away. The rivers Dronne and Lisle are popular with fishermen and canoeists and are close by. There are several riding stables nearby. Bicycles are for hire locally (please arrange to book in high season). There are several lakes, particularly La Jemaye which is popular for windsurfing. Perigueux, capital city of the Dordogne, is about 45 mins away with its pedestrianised old town and famous 5 cupola cathedral. Angouleme, capital city of the Charente, is a similar distance and famous for its streets of restaurants. There are several chateaux (particularly Bourdeilles) within easy distance and the largest monolithic church in Europe at Aubeterre, 20 mins, a pretty town in its own right. Further away is Sarlat and the caves of Lascaux.
