Notes: This is a perfect place for a couple exploring the area who like peace and tranquility... as long as you like country noises then this is great. Stavros the donkey can't help himself when he sees someone - he brays, he's not ours but is totally convinced he belongs to us! We also have a flock of chickens, quite a few cockerels (that chant in the morning), as well as a goose, they have complete freedom to wander over all our land, our freshly laid eggs are available. We do have 5 small dogs and quite a few cats... none of which are allowed in the apartment or the cottage - but they all love visitors so if you are missing yours Madge will oblige - so before you decide to come please be aware they will expect you to say hello when you come and go or you are in the garden! Our Jack Russell's do not understand being ignored! We're very close to the motorway (can't hear it) equidistant 8kms to Carentan, Ste Mere Eglise and Utah Beach. We're in the heart of the WW2 American sector

Further details for this holiday apartment rental in Sainte-Mere-Eglise, France

Utah Beach & Regional Park: Set in Normandy within Cotentin and Bessin Marshlands Regional Natural Park which covers 145,000 hectare with 144 villages and towns within the Park. WW2 Utah Beach the Invasion beach, located less than 10 minutes from us, is a significantly important coastal protected area of 12,000 acres with the Beauguillot Nature Reserve/Bird Sanctuary of 1,200 acres.

The area is stunning countryside and completely different each season. For example in the winter the marshlands flood to create a beautiful watery scenery with the big skies reflected, then in the summer it becomes pasture with cows peacefully grazing.

This coast being slightly wilder than the west coast is very unspoilt especially with the government owning vast tracts of the coast line to preserve the natural beauty.

This area in Normandy is also famous for it’s horses with numerous stud farms and training stables. On Utah Beach world class Trotting Horses are trained everyday on the beach.

The beaches and seafood: There is something for everyone, bird watchers, beach lovers, gourmets, wine lovers, walkers, bike riders, horse riders, wind surfers, sand yachters, sailing, diving, horse racing, interest in the 2nd world war Normandy Landing Beaches, 101st Airborne or just generally exploring…the problem here is that there is too much to do!

Yet in the summer the beaches are paradise, miles and miles of golden sands a perfect spot for a peaceful read, a sun bathe or beach combing, shell fish gathering for your supper when the tide is out, it's safe to swim and it's not crowded. With the bird sanctuary on Utah Beach there is an amazing number of different species of sea birds and ducks If it is particularly quiet on the beach you may be able to spot the colony of seals.

Huge mussels and oysters beds with the produce destined for the finest restaurants and tables in Paris and other gourmet destinations – it is possible to purchase shellfish direct from the farm shops locally

Cycling & Walking & Invasion Beaches: We are set in the heart of the Normandy D Day Invasion beaches with WW2 Utah Beach 10 minutes away, Ste Mere Eglise & Carentan both 8 kms from us & as we are 2 minutes from N13 we are in an ideal location for easy access to go sight seeing, war tours etc.

Bayeux, Mont St Michel are just short drives away, it is even possible to go to Jersey for the day from here!

Animals - We're know as Arc de Noah here in our village! we have 2 Llamas. 2 kune kune pet pigs, 2 very friendly goats, 2 sheep, lots and lots of bantam & silkie chickens all at liberty, 1 goose, 2 turkeys, 3 young Jack Russell's that live for visitors! & 2 little old dogs aged 18 & 12 & 5 cats.

Cycling or walking holidays...1,000 km of trails for cycling with one of the 22km routes starting outside our gate!

If you like local produce then there are many farms open to the general public, where you can see the produce being made and buy some to take home. It's possible to have tours round the Camembert factories.

Golf:

Fontenay Sur Mer 18 hole Links Course

Omaha Beach close by also a famous Links course

Other Activities:

Bird watching, dolphin & seal watching, boat trips round the invasion beaches, sand yachting, para wind surfing, beach combing.

Urlaubswoche im Oktober 2009

Review Submitted: October 18, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much - the Llama arrived today - how I wish you could have been here... still it means you have to come back to meet Fernando & take him for a walk!

Sabine and Jurgen We recommend this house and the place full of people who seek peace and quiet, loves animals are (There are goats, pigs, donkeys, chickens, geese, cats and dogs on the property) and no in close proximity to the hustle and bustle. Ideal comfortable base for discovering Normandie

Review Submitted: September 21, 2011 Date of Stay: September 2011
The apartment was spotless and really comfortable. Wonderful base for discovering the beaches and the bocage. Highlights were the visit to the 'Nez de Joburg.' - a wonderful coastal walk, and the visit to the Bayeur Tapistry - an amazing experience.
Good supermarket at Saint Mere Eglise.
Houesville is a small quiet village.
Tansy & Mike were good friendly hosts.

Ferme de l'eglise

Review Submitted: July 19, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We stayed in the apartment and found it exactly as stated and very comfortable. Everything you need for two people is there and our dog Frost was so comfortable we had a problem waking him up!
As Tansy herself states 'if you don't like animals don't book'. We love 'em and boy there are animals aplenty here. In particular this is a dog lovers paradise BUT you need to be able to allow your dog to socialise because the dogs who live here do - all the time! If you are a 'keep em on a tight lead' owner then you may find the locals attention disconcerting. But be assured the dogs are wonderful and if it hadn't been for the fact we are Christians we may just have stolen Grace the adorable JR puppy.
This is an excellent base for exploring and visiting the whole DDay area. But two pieces of advice. Visit as many museums etc as you like but don't miss the many information panels scattered around the area in general and St Marie du Mont and St Marie d'Eglise in particular. They give an excellent sense of what it was like for the local inhabitants too. Also try to visit the privately owned Musee d'Occupation in St Marie du Mont which describes the experience of living under the German army.
Secondly don't ignore the beautiful and amazingly quiet West Coast of the Cotentin Peninsula - breathtaking!
So if you like rurality, love animals and want real home comfort then this is the place for you.
Thanks Tansy and Mike for a great holiday - and can we adopt Grace if you get fed up with her (unlikely!!).
Terry & Elaine & Frost.
PS and VIP - let Tansy arrange your dog's return vets visit - you'll save money and aggravation.

Owner's Response: Very pleased the vet worked out - we have been using him for almost 12 years.

wonderful place to stay in Normandy

Review Submitted: June 28, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
We have just enjoyed a weeks stay in the barn conversion and can thoroughly recommend. The accomodation is of a very high standard with every need catered for even down to dressing gowns, logs to burn and a lovely wetroom style bathroom.
We have travelled to France many times but always keep returning to Normandy. It is a lovely place with so many interesting places to visit and the people are always so friendly. Everyone should visit the D-Day beaches once in their lives to appreciate the history and how wonderful the cemetries are kept and the events respected.
Tansy and Mike are fantastic hosts and couldnt have been more friendly and helpful. Their home is gorgeous especially if you are animal lovers like us, with lots of friendly creatures to meet!
Ideally placed. only 5 mins from Utah beach and 10 minute drive to lots of restaurants, supermarkets etc and although probably easier to reach via ferry crossing to Normandy, we travelled on the Tunnel and the drive is extremely straight forward and hassle free.
Spotlessly clean, high quality fittings, lovely place to stay.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway
Owner's Response: Thank you!

There sure is plenty to see and visit in this area, the museums in regard to D Day are continually improving and developing, we're becoming a designated area of significant importance for the coastline at Utah Beach, St Vaast la Hougue a 30 minute drive away is already a UNESCO site, plus being in the heart of the beautiful Park Naturel Cotentin & Bessin we really do appreciate our area and do love to share it's secrets with our visitors.

It is a lovely drive to Calais, the Pont du Normandie is always a thrill to cross and with the roads not exactly M25 traffic capacity, motoring in France is still a pleasure!

Hope you remember us when you return to Normandy!

A memorable visit

Review Submitted: June 20, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
If you want to stay in a small Normandy village where you wake up to the sound of church bells and a braying donkey, then this is the place for you. The apartment we stayed in, was ideal for a couple. Well equipped, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Outside, in this pretty setting, are dogs, cats, pigs, chickens, sheep and llamas ,
In Tansy and Mike you have the perfect hosts.
If you are interested in the Normandy Invasion, this is an ideal base. Situated in the American sector a short distance from Utah beach, with its new museum,
The N13 road is 5 minutes from the property, providing fast access to the other invasion sites, museums, and the unforgettable, and poignant cemeteries
The purchase of a Normandie pass, which costs one Euro, and gives reduced entry to participating museums, is a worthwhile investment
Bayeux with its famous tapestry, is well worth a visit, and can be easily combined with a visit to the main British war cemetery (There is no parking at the cemetery, so park in the museum opposite, and walk across to the cemetery)
The world-heritage site of the Abbey of Mount Saint-Michael is under an hour & a half from the property, and is magnificent. If you are going to visit this, heed Tansy’s advice as to the timing of your visit.
We had a sat nav , which would sometimes take us across country, on minor roads. Here we found the Hidden Normandy , of narrow country roads winding through beautiful countryside , with delightful and picturesque villages
At the end of some very interesting but tiring days , it was great to get back to the property, to sit in comfort, having a glass of wine. To add to the pleasure as we stepped out of the car, there to greet us would be Madge the Jack Russell, tail waging ball in mouth, wanting to play. Wonderful !
We had seven days here, and in the end there was so much we missed. We will return.

Thank you Tansy & Mike for making our visit so memorable, you are the perfect hosts.

Owner's Response: What can I say, except, thank you! Not only for choosing our apartment & writing a great description of what we have to offer here in Normandy, you were perfect guests.

Having lived here now for over 10 years, (we totally love this area), to share it with others is a privilege, we still find new things all the time... we do hope we welcome you back sooner rather than later!
