Photos and Description of this Salcombe holiday cottage
Access straight onto safe sandy beach, sleeps 5 plus sofa bed.

The Crab Pot was originally a Look Out to watch for enemy approaching Salcombe Harbour. It was built on the rocks in the south corner of South Sands which is the most southerly bay in the Salcombe estuary. It is now a fabulous newly refurbished cottage with panoramic views up the estuary and out to sea. Two bedrooms - master bedroom has a five foot double bed and the second bedroom has been cleverly designed to allow three adult sized beds to fit in the unusually shaped room. The sitting room has a large picture window overlooking the beach and a brand new kitchen has been created in what was one of the original lime kilns. There is a washing machine, freezer, TV and wireless broadband. A small paved garden at the back of the cottage provides a private area to barbeque and is a perfect suntrap. Parking is available. Perfect for family holidays and all who enjoy all seaside activities. South Sands is a safe sandy beach.

South Sands beach is a beautiful sandy beach (Blue Flag) with a shop, café and hotel bar/restaurant, safe bathing, some moorings, easy boat launching and a regular and frequent ferry service to Salcombe Town during the summer months. Parking is limited, but there is a small car park. Walk up to Bolt Head beyond which the cliffs and headlands are owned by the National Trust and see the views into Salcombe and the walk along the coastal path is spectacular. Just along the coast and a short drive away there is an excellent golf course at Thurlestone. A visit to Plymouth (30 miles) is always interesting with its history of Francis Drake and maritime museum. Several hours can be spent in the market town of Totnes (18 miles) situated on the Dart River with its specialist craft shops and cafes. A visit to the naval base at Dartmouth makes another good day out. Quaint individual shops line the harbour wall.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Salcombe, United Kingdom

Salcombe is a beautiful seaside town in the most southern tip of Devon. The sheltered beaches and green South Hams hills form a perfect backdrop to the crescent shaped estuary which is brought to life with a huge variety of boats wending their way. Golden beaches are dotted all along both sides of the estuary which are perfect for family days on the beach. All are accessible by ferry or foot. Salcombe is known to have a “micro-climate” so visitors can enjoy glorious sunshine while just a few miles away the land is shrouded in mist.

It is a perfect holiday spot for all ages with safe sandy beaches for young children, all kinds of watersports for all ages including sailing, surfing, scuba diving amongst many others. There are also impressive walks along lovely coastal paths with stunning views. Walk from Bolt Head to Hope Cove along the coastal path with your dogs (beware the sheep!) or take the ferry across from Salcombe to East Portlemouth and walk to Gara Rock. Overbecks, the National Trust garden, at Bolt Head has some very interesting and unusual plants for the green fingered visitors. There is a great choice of restaurants and pubs where visitors can enjoy locally caught fish and shellfish. Fishing trips can be arranged as well as hire of sailing and pleasure boats. Salcombe, with its large sheltered bay, has become one of the main sailing centres in England. There is an excellent sailing school on South Sands beach which caters for all ages and the emphasis is on fun!

Stressed to relaxed in three days!

Review Submitted: March 29, 2010 Date of Stay: March 2010
We booked The Crab Pot with only 5 days notice, wanting a break from our own self-catering and B&B before the Easter rush. It didn't disappoint. Very clean, bright and well equipped. Only two of us so we spread around, but bunk beds and sofa bed plus basins in both bedrooms, another one in the loo, and a separate shower means that a family should be happy there as well. The waves lapped around the sitting area and we spent many hours just reading by the window and being entertained by the bird and human visitors to the beach!
The refurbishment of the South Sands Hotel next door is nearly finished and will be very smart later this spring. We very much hope to return once the season is over to recharge again. Thanks to the owner for everything.

Excellent holiday

Review Submitted: May 12, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We have just returned from a week at the crab pot and it was without a doubt the most relaxing week anyone could wish for.

You often read summaries about places being on the beach and have to take them with a pinch of salt but the crab pot is definately an exception. It is literally on the beach.

If you're an active outdoors person then the crab pot is perfectly located for you. There are loads of watersports activities in the area as well as great walking trails and fabulous beaches. For us, Bigbury on Sea is around a 25 minute drive away and is the most fantastic beach, particularly at low tide.

If you would prefer to lounge around and just do nothing you can do so in the crab pots living room looking out over the sea or on the beach. Either way, you wont be sorry!

For those who love the night life, Salcombe is somewhat limited, but that is to be expected given it is a tiny town. Plymouth is just 50 minutes drive away and has a great night life with loads of clubs and bars for all ages.

In terms of eating, the Winking Prawn on North Sands Beach is definately worth a visit as is The Sloop in Bantham.

For dog owners, unfortunately there is a dog ban on South Sands beach from May - September, but north sands is open to dogs as well as various other beaches (including Bigbury-on-Sea (to the left of the ramp))

The property is very well equipped. We didn't need to take any cutlery, crockery, pots, pans, etc. The owner has a really neat little bbq ideal for 3 - 4 people, beach chairs, beach toys, etc all available for use by tennants.

Thanks for an excellent break Jane, I will definately be recommending the Crab Pot to my friends.

Perfect relaxing break

Review Submitted: April 15, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
We just spent a wonderful 5 nights at The Crab Pot. It was the most relaxing time at a wonderful location. With the beach just below the windows, our 5 year old was able to play safely on the beach - even without us there as we were able to see her at all times. The beach is very very clean & safe, and there is a lovely cafe serving hot & cold drinks, ice creams & snacks. You can also learn to surf & sail from here. For the evenings the Tides Reach Hotel has a bar with lovely views, but we didn't eat there as they do not allow children under 8 years old in. The ferry over to Salcombe is great, running every 30 mins, it is a lovely adventure everytime you go on it. We did some lovely walks from South Sands - the views were amazing. We can thoroughly recommend The Sloop at Bantham to eat - which is about a 10 minute drive from South Sands. The cooking facilities in the property are excellent, there are plenty pots & pans, plates, glasses etc. We had a lovely BBQ on the beach! The property is very very clean and well maintained and I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to anyone. We will definately return!
