Photos and Description of this Tornac holiday farmhouse
Spacious well-equipped self-catering rental, private pool, lovely countryside.

Le Mas du Coq is a charming stone-built C. XVII Languedoc farmhouse, cool in summer and full of architectural interest, renovated with style and equipped to a high standard. On the edge of a peaceful hamlet on the borders of the Cevennes (World Heritage site), just outside the pleasant market town of Anduze. It has stunning views over vineyards, olive groves and unspoilt countryside. The secluded garden and a wide upper terrace offer panoramic views and multiple choices of sun or shade, with a private electrolysis salt-water pool, 9mx3mx1.8m, easy on the skin and long enough to exercise as well as relax. A large kitchen downstairs, and a second kitchen upstairs add flexibility especially for two sharing families or three generations together. Our English-speaking representative is welcoming and responsive. Our first guests wrote' The photographs do not do your lovely house justice.' How true, its full charm has to be seen to be appreciated. Internet from April.

Details for Le Mas du Coq 4 Bedrooms, Sleeps 8, 3 Bathrooms, 1 Separate WC

The rooms are generously proportioned. On the ground floor there two double bedrooms, with a large kitchen, dining room, and salon, opening out onto a secluded garden and the 9x3metre electrolysis salt-water pool. On the bright and spacious upper floor there are two further double bedrooms, a large salon and a second well-equipped kitchen, which allows plenty of space for two families or three generations to be together when they want and separate when they want. None of the bedrooms adjoin each other, adding to the privacy aspect! The large upper balcony has sun and shade and wonderful views. The balconies and separate garden divisions with mature trees offer many opportunities for quiet leisure away from the main garden area. There are CD and DVD libraries, board games and TVs on both floors with separate access to UK satellite and French channels. There is a separate barbecue area with brick-built barbecue. The garden and pool are maintained by local experts

Le Mas du Coq lies on the edge of the hamlet of St Roman, 4 kms from the market town of Anduze, ‘the door to the Cevennes’, on the pretty River Gardon. Anduze has excellent local shops, restaurants, markets, a supermarket and all services, and we are 45 minutes from the sea and the historic cities of Nmes and Uzes. The gorges of the Ardèche, the salt-marshes of the Camargue, the charming towns of Avignon and Orange are all within easy reach. Hill-walking, pony-riding and wine-tasting are popular activities. There are grottoes and a famous bamboo park to visit, and a little steam train winds scenically up to a market town in the Cevennes. A car is essential to enjoy all that is on offer.

Great reaction from visitors: One of the Fox family emailed us:

Thanks also for a fantastic holiday - we had a brilliant time. As I mentioned in your visitors book, we were a little concerned that there would be enough to occupy three active teenagers - but were pleasantly surprised... in fact we wished we had an extra week in order to carry out all we wanted to!

Le Mas du Coq is a beautiful home in a stunning vacation - we could not have wanted for more. In fact, after years of 'talking about the dream' we have now decided that we do want to buy a house/project in France and we thank you both for inspiring us in this regard! We have already started looking for our version of the French dream and have come home with lots of brochures!!l

We will definitely be in touch again about booking Le Mas du Coq and will be recommending it to our friends.

(I suggested that one of their teenagers might write us a review - but the holiday had obviously been so relaxing the review has never quite arrived........)

Dream Holiday Home

Review Submitted: July 7, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
This place is magical. Gorgeous old house, fabulous views, roses and lavender growing round the pool...we loved it.

The house and pool are even better than the photographs suggest - but it's the layout of the property that is its greatest strength. It's a big house by any standards, so it suits large family groups - but it's cleverly designed in such a way that one can always drift away to find a quiet spot to read or snooze or sunbathe. The spacious salons, the L-shaped balcony, the shade of two large trees, the gravelled barbeque area...all perfect secret spaces to retreat to. In practical terms the house is so easy to live in - both the upstairs and downstairs kitchens are fully equipped; there are plenty of loos (including an outside loo) and the gardening, linen and pool-care are all taken care of.

The best thing about the sleeping arrangements is that the house is divided into upper and lower apartments (divided by a sturdy red door). All our kids (and one set of parents) slept in the upper apartments - so when the little ones woke at the crack of dawn they had the run of the upper space (two bedrooms, large sitting room with telly, kitchen and sunny balcony). And only one set of parents had to burrow their heads under the pillows!

We had three little children with us (under-fives) and an eleven-year-old. Big outings included the Steam Train, the Bambouseraie, the Haribo factory, and the Grottes de Desmoiselles. Little outings (which were just as popular!) were to the market and the playpark in Anduze, and a stroll down the hill to watch the horses grazing. And the nearest lovely beach is within an hour away. The kids were also very happy just exploring the property and swimming.

Grown-up outings included several more far-flung markets, and a day in Ales, visiting the stunning but sadly neglected cathederal, the Pierre Andre Benoit art gallery (which is absolutely not to be missed if modern art is your "thing" - they have Picassos and Picabias) and the dusty-but-charming Colombier museum (beaux-arts & archeologie).

A wonderful, unforgettable holiday.

Oh, and good for bird-watching - we saw hoopoes and heard Scops Owls.

Perfection in the Countryside of France

Review Submitted: January 9, 2012 Date of Stay: March 2011
My husband and I along with our 8 month old son stayed at Le Mas du Coq for 6 weeks through March and into April. It is quite hard to put into words what we experienced...it was simply magical. I wanted to stay forever. We had both sets of parents come to visit as well as three sets of friends. They all loved it as much as we did.

The house is laid out perfectly for housing many families. The upstairs suite is where we called home. We had our own kitchen, bathroom and living room as well as two bedrooms. Not to mention the large deck overlooking the surrounding vineyards and country houses.

The caretaker was always easy to reach and very helpful and handy. Our son loved him.

As with all hamlets in France the houses in the towns are very close together - the "road" that separates them is little more than a footpath. We got to know the neighbours a bit as we were there for so long and they were very welcoming and helpful and friendly. If you were just there for a week you might not see anyone.

The owner was incredibly generous and helpful and was also very easy to reach. We have nothing but warm regards for him.

The area is fabulous. We love taking day trips and touring around so we were happy to get into the car to go to the bigger towns, the sea side, etc. The 45 minute drive to Uzes was well worth it and we would make it twice a week for markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

We loved Anduze and quickly became familiar with the top sellers of vegetables, meat, and pastries.

We wrote a detailed review of our stay in the guest book with lots of hints and tips that could be useful to future guests.

The house was tastefully decorated. It was comfortable and served our every need. All of our guests felt like they were staying at a lovely b&b. I can't say enough good things about this place. I would recommend it to anyone anytime.

We can't wait to come back!

A beautiful house where much thought has gone into style and decoration.
Spacious, comfortable and a superb kitchen, fully equipped. We quickly felt at home!
The information provided was helpful and we particularly enjoyed the village markets and the steam train journey from Anduze.
Would recommend a visit to Avignon, approx 80 kms, if you have enought time.
Took great pleasure in sampling the local wines and found not one, but two corkscrews in the kitchen drawer - that is good organisation for you!
Our visit lived up to expectation in every respect and we would have no hesitation in recommending the property to family and friends or, indeed, revisiting ourselves.

Owner's Response: And that was just one drawer, there are other corkscrews elsewhere including in the other kitchen! Other essential items include lots of kitchen knifes and sharpeners, wine coolers, oyster openers and forks, kitchen utensils and pots to satisfy the most demanding chef (and Mediterranean recipe books for the less advanced), and many herbs in the garden. But then again why not just chill out on a lounger by the salt-water pool?

Beautiful house in stunning location

Review Submitted: August 19, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2010
Probably the best house we have stayed in over the years - despite arriving with armfuls of guide books we did nothing except sitting and reading by the pool for the entire week - HEAVEN.
We've visited most areas of France but never the Cevennes - would thoroughly recommend.

Superb Holiday - We Didn't Want To Leave!

Review Submitted: August 4, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2010
The house was beautifully presented and has clearly been a labour of love. We loved the layout and (despite enjoying outdoor dining) found the sanctuary of the dinning room (just inside the large sliding doors) a welcome change for the occasional indoor lunch. We were a family of 4 and didn't need to use the upstairs at all, so could understand how there would be plenty of room for 2 families.

The house was very well equipped and we couldn't think of anything else we needed - except maybe an IPOD docking station.

The pool was simply fabulous and the garden (though not huge) was ample, with plenty of sun or shade throughout the day.

The Owner's recommendations for local villages (Sauve was beautiful) and restaurants went down well - in particular their favourite La Grange de Labouze which was superb. We went out for a quick last lunch on the Friday and ended up having 3 courses over 2 hours!

The House book is informative and comprehensive, and I found the owners extremely helpful, efficient and responsive.

Neighbours are quite close but, being in a small hamlet, we hardly noticed they were there.

In the past we have only zipped through nearby Anduze (to the wonderful Bambouserie and the steam train that runs up the Cevennes valley) but we really enjoyed being close enough to spend a little more time there. The market is worth a visit - it rivals the famous Uzes market in my view and is less chaotic (though Uzes is worth a visit too - whether it's market day or not).

We were also very pleased that our favourite beaches were within a reasonable distance; around an hour to La Grande Motte which is great for small kids or L'Espiguette - if your bank balance can stand it, visit La Voile Bleue, a fabulous restaurant on the beach at La Grande Motte. A little flash for some but the sound of the sea as you eat dinner is magical. See their website.

Also within easy reach of another of our favourite haunts - the stony river beach at Collias; where you can swim, take a Kayak/Canoe down the river to the spectacular Pont du Gard or eat on the terrace at L'Enclos Restaurant - great view from the terrace.

All in all, great house, great location, great time! I would definitely recommend this property to friends & family.

PS can't forget the rosé!
