Charentaise Farmhouse.

As soon as you drive through the wrought iron gates, you know that you have come to a haven of peace and tranquillity. The 10' wall provides the property with complete privacy and the large gardens have many shady spots to enjoy quiet moments. There is an orchard to the side, with fruit trees including figs, cherries and walnuts. At the rear of the property the private pool is surrounded by a terrace and is next to a covered area, perfect for barbecues and outdoor dining. The house is well equipped to a high standard - a home away from home. As well as a farmhouse-style kitchen there is a large utility room. We have two salons (or sitting rooms). One is open plan to the dining room (separated by 3 steps) and has an open fire, a TV with satellite channels, and DVD player. The second salon has another TV and a small table for board games. Open stairs from the dining room take you to a mezzanine level with full size French billiard table and bookshelves with lots of English novels.

Our house is on the outskirts of Cognac, within a few minutes of all the main brandy distilleries. There are interesting tours at Remy-Martin, Hennessy and Martell with opportunities to taste and buy. Boat trips and canoeing are available on the river Charente, and the Place de Pleine Air has lost of fun activities for children in the summer. The market is an experience in itself, with lost of yummy local produce (the seafood is particularly good here) If you want to go further afield, the coast is about an hour away. La Rochelle has the aquarium and the Old Town, Bordeaux is great for its architecture, wine and shopping or try Jonzac for its indoor pool complex/spa.

The downstairs bedrooms make the house suitable for elderly or disabled people. There is a small step down to the kitchen area and 3 broad, shallow steps up from the dining room to the salon (see photo). The pool is 5m x 10m (the depth is 1m at the shallow end and slopes to 2m at the deep end) and surrounded by a large terrace and a covered area for barbecues and outdoor dining. There is a pool alarm to keep young children safe.
