NEAREST TOWN -CIVRAY (5 min) on the beautiful RIVER CHARENTE-good choice of bars, cafes and restaurants, some overlooking the river Charente, others tucked away up the quaint little side streets. There is a newly opened art gallery where you can buy very reasonably priced art. 3 GOOD HYPERMARKETS, swimming pool, tennis courts, sports center, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, Romanesque church, tourism office.
LAKES at St Macoux and St Martin Lars with restaurant on the lake. Wigwams and canoe hire. Artificial beach.
CANOE AND KAYAK HIRE from the camp site in Civray, have a drink in the outdoor bar overlooking the river.
GOLF at Poitiers and Angouleme.
MARKETS in Civray, Charroux, Chaunay, Ruffec, Poitiers.
BEACHES at 90 minutes drive. Ile de Re beautiful long white stretches of white sandy beaches and up market shops. Great day out.
LA ROCHELLE glamorous yachting port. Great seafood retaurants.

The nearest ferry port is St Malo which is just over 4 hrs drive, Brittany ferries goes from Portsmouth to St Malo and runs a good overnight service, cabins available. From the South west you could take the ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff, or Poole to Cherbourg, 6 hour drive approx to the house. In the East of England you may prefer to take one of the many ferries from Dover, there are several companies and the prices are very competitive. Euro tunnel is also an option, up to 7 hrs drive this side.
AIRPORT PICKUPS A POSSIBILITY.Flights from Birmingham or London Stanstead to POITIERS airport which is only 40 minutes drive, car hire available, alternatively fly from DUBLIN to LA ROCHELLE, 1hr 30 drive. Fly with flybe from BIRMINGHAM, GLASGOW, MANCHESTER, SOUTHAMPTON to LA ROCHELLE 1hr 30 drive, from NEWCASTLE or SOUTHAMPTON to LIMOGES 1hr 30 drive or with easyjet from BRISTOL or LONDON LUTON to BORDEAUX which is 2 hrs drive

FUTUROSCOPE at Poitiers - Incredible virtual reality theme park, a world class attraction and one not to be missed, especially the lazer and firework display over the lake every night at 10pm.
MONKEY SANCTUARY at Romagne.- A completely different concept in animal parks.See 350 monkeys roaming free in their natural habitat, walk through their enclosures. Great day out. Restaurant, souvenir shop.
THE LAKES AT PAYRE -22 hectare park with electric boats, water toboggan run, electric karts for young children, pic-nic. Free access.
THE LABIRYNTHE- Huge Maze made totally out of corn on the cob plants, this incredible natural maze is great fun, only 15 min drive from the house. Perfect for a hot day, water sprinklers to cool you down.
