The house is called Mary Duggan's because traditionally houses in Ireland were called by their owner's name. The Duggan family lived in this Valley for hundreds of years. The house is situated in the heart of rural West Cork. The coast is about 5 miles away. The house is in easy reach of the thriving market towns of Bantry, Schull and Skibbereen. West Cork is full of surprises: spectacular landscapes, good walking (Mount Kid on your doorstep-and the local Sheep's Head Way, a lovely 2 day hike), a wonderful sandy beach at Barley Cove and many secret beaches (and lakes at Three Castle Head along the Mizen is spectacular) along the coast are all worth exploring. The West Cork area is also the home of artisan food producers; there are weekly markets where you can buy the local cheeses (some award winners), charcuterie, bread, fish and vegetables. There is also a large organic market. So why not try this haven of peace, peaceful and fun in an unforgettable location. Lovely hidden stream.

We are located 1.5 hours from Cork Airport, 4.5 hours from Dublin and 4 hours from Shannon's Airports. Killarney is 1.5 hours to the North, Kinsale 50 minutes to our East, Mizen Head 45 minutes to our South West and Cork City 2 hours East. Famous tourist attractions include Lis Ard House and fameous Sky Garden, Bantry House, SKibbereen Heritage Center for the Famine, Barley Cove Beach, Three Castle Head and Mizen Head. Gougan Berra and an sundry of walks such as Sheeps head and some hidden places on the Berra Penn in the charming village of Glengarriff. Drombeg Circle in the village of Glandore is enchanting and situated by the sea. A visit to Union Hall Village is en-route to Glandore, and a stop in at Union Hall's local fish market is a must which boasts the most amazing variety of fish this part of Ireland. We also do brunch on Saturday or Sunday (your choice) on the house.

  • An added bonus is our neighbors Chris and Pattie, who live a mile away on Mount Kid. They look after the house and can also look after you. Chris is a professional chef and Pattie is a wonderful host. If you want, they could entertain in their lovely farmhouse, or just provide you with a ready meal at Mary Duggan's after a long day out, when all you may wish to do is crash and enjoy staying around the homestead. (Note-any arrangements need to be negotiated separately from the rent-but I recommend you try it!)

Culture of West Cork: Local Pubs are full of local craic and music. The nearest village, Ballydehob has 11 pubs in one street. There are classical concerts in nearby Bantry House. There are many artists and craftsman working in the area too. In all it is a wonderful, friendly combination of rural and cosmopolitan. Everyone mixes and the atmosphere is very welcoming and warm. It's just as good in Winter as it is in the Summer.

Other Activities: An Sanctoir offers dance, yoga and holistic courses throughout the year. We are located 10 minutes.
