Photos and Description of this Villefranche de Conflent holiday apartment Charming property in medieval village which is a UNESCO world heritage site

These luxurious and spacious apartments can be rented separately or together to accommodate up to 13+ people. They are to be found in the heart of the medieval village, just across the road from the traditional Catalan bakery. Oozing character and charm, they are newly refurbished in such a way as to retain original features such as marble and polished wooden floors and traditional wooden beams. Featuring an eclectic mix of antique and classical furnishings, combined with modern fittings, they are designed to provide comfortable and yet authentic accommodation. Each apartment sleeps 6+, has 3 double bedrooms, a salon comprising kitchen/sitting room/dining room and its own private terrace which backs onto the medieval village walls. One apartment features a 4 poster bed and 2 shower-rooms/WC, whilst the other has a stunning roof terrace. A travel cot, extra single bed, pushchair and toys are available to take some of the headache out of travelling with young children.

Details for Cady 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 8, 2 Bathrooms

CADY comprises three double bedrooms (one of which offers a four-poster bed, with a second offering a traditional ¾ bed and a single bed, both fashioned from brass and cast iron), two shower-rooms/WC, and a salon comprising kitchen/sitting room/dining room. This apartment also benefits from a fully-enclosed terrace area which backs onto the medieval city walls. Whilst families are welcome in both gites, CADY is perhaps the most suitable for families with young children, as it has a completely enclosed, and so safe, terrace area. It should nevertheless be noted that whilst the gite is well-equipped, with 2 shower-rooms, it does not have a bath

Set in the beautiful department of Languedoc-Roussillon, which lays claim to 134 miles of beaches, and over 300 sunny days a year, the medieval fortified village of Villefranche is: 50 minutes from the Mediterranean coast, 50 minutes from the ski slopes, 1 hour 10 minutes from the Spanish border and 1 hour 50 minutes from Andorra. The village occupies a prized location at the confluence of the Cady and Tet Rivers and lies at the base of three mountains, one of these being the sacred mountain of the Catalans, Mount Canigou. As you approach the village, you see only its ramparts and fortifications, which, founded in 1092, have remained untouched by subsequent development. Its civic architecture, (22 thirteenth- and fourteenth century facades are registered as historical monuments), is as well preserved as its military ramparts. Within its walls, the village comprises a series of medieval lanes with beautiful wrought iron signs identifying the numerous shops and restaurants.

DAYS OUT IN VILLEFRANCHE: Built into the mountainside high above the village, FORT LIBERIA was designed by the military engineer Vauban in the seventeenth century to protect the valuable position of Villefranche after the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees established the new Franco-Spanish border close by. The fort can be accessed by the four-wheel drive Landrover which does trips throughout the day, by walking around the mountain, or via a subterranean stairway comprising 742 steps. From Villefranche you can catch the charming PETIT TRAIN JAUNE, through the Pyrenees. With open-air carriages in the summer, spectacular views of plunging mountainsides and steep gorges, the train passes through the highest station in France (5,000ft above sea level). Estimated at between 30 and 400 million years old, spectacular CAVES, just outside the village walls, have amazing stalactites and stalagmites, and run sound and light shows every evening during July and August. The CITY WALLS are great fun for kids. MUSHROOM MUSEUM

DAYS OUT WITHIN 5 MILES OF THE VILLAGE: The 7 acre CASTEIL ANIMAL PARK boasts many animals including lions, bears, wolves, monkeys and wallabies, amongst others. Described as the Paradise of the Pyrenees, VERNET LES BAINS is a chocolate box picture of a village. A thermal spa resort, it is officially designated as a centre for green tourism. Enjoying a micro-climate, it has the first Village Arboretum in France, with over 1,500 trees planted throughout the village including some 200 different species. The village also has a geological museum with a fine collection of specimens including remarkable crystals and marine fossils. For families there is an open-air swimming pool which is open throughout the summer months, tennis courts and the grand total of four lovely playparks. Ramblers and mountain bilkers will find many superb tracks signposted around the village, and for mountaineers, the imposing Mount Canigou beckons! PRADES is the nearest sizeable town to Villefranche, and holds a large weekly market.

FURTHER AFIELD: The world famous ST MARTIN OF CANIGOU is easil accessed from Villefranche. There is a SWIMMING LAKE at Vinca, about 15 minutes drive from the village, with pedaloes and bouncy castle during the summer months. Miles of beautiful sandy BEACHES are to be found within 50 minutes drive of the village. At St. Thomas-Les-Bains, about half an hour's drive away, incredible outdoor THERMAL POOLS in a wonderful mountain setting are accessible to all for the princely sum of 5 Euros!! For ladies, a comprehensive range of massage and beauty treatments are also on offer here. The “Neiges Catalan” incorporate a number of SKIING resorts within 1 hour’s drive of Villefranche, and comprise: • 110 ski lifts • 190 runs • 278km of ski slopes • 1320 snow cannons • 348km of cross-country The larger resorts include Les Angles, Pyrenees 2000, Formigueres, and Font Romeu.

Ski: The “Neiges Catalan” incorporate a number of SKIING resorts within 1 hour’s drive of Villefranche, and comprise: • 110 ski lifts • 190 runs • 278km of ski slopes • 1320 snow cannons • 348km of cross-country The larger resorts include Les Angles, Pyrenees 2000, Formigueres, and Font Romeu. At Font Romeu, lift passes are free for children under the age of 6, representing a significant saving on a family ski holiday. As of November some of the resorts are already open with snow cover, and the long-term snow forecast is very good. It is possible to take an independent ski break here without a vehicle, as the Petit Train Jaune runs daily to Font Romeu. Additionally, a newly launched bus service will, on 3 days per week initially, collect skiers from Villefranche, to arrive at Les Angles for 9.30am, departing at 5.30pm. A car nevertheless provides the opportunity to explore further afield, and perhaps have a day skiing in Andorra, or visit the thermal baths at St. Thomas.

Excellent place to stay in a pittoresque village

JanMir Zoetermeer, Holland
Review Submitted: November 18, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We, a family of 4 with two boys aged 10 and 12, had an excellent week in Villefranche. The village is amazing, so pittoresque and so much to see and do in and around the village. And we loved the food! The boulangerie of course but also the crepe place and especially Au Grill!
The house itself is amazing, so spacious, well decorated, well maintained, the boys felt like princes in their romantic rooms, and well, so did we! We liked the shady terrace, too.
Ted and Shona did everything to help us, lent us their mountain bikes, drove us to the supermarket, gave us lots of ideas about trips and even arranged a trip for us! I would love to come back and strongly recommend renting the house to anyone.

Perfect rental for families with kids

Review Submitted: November 16, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009
We - two Swedish families with three kids - rented both appartments in Feb. 09. The descriptions on this web-site are very accurate. Both appartments are very well-maintained and perfectly clean and the service provided by the owner was excellent. We would certainly recommend any or both appartements to anyone interested in staying in Villefranche which is a nice town in a splendid region.

Spacious with wonderful atmosphere

RSR Vancouver Canada
Review Submitted: November 16, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
With literally thousands of rental properties to choose from in Languedoc, we picked this apartment in Villefranche because of its location in a Unesco World Heritage site, and its price which seemed quite reasonable. We were not disappointed.
As we drove up to the ramparts of the walled village, we felt as if we were travelling back in time. The apartment was easy to find, huge for 3 people, clean and supplied with everything we needed. When we met the owner, she gave us some great tips on local excursions and beaches etc.
Villefranche is quite an amazing site, but also very touristy, so we spent quite a few of our days exploring the area - our favourite places were the Wednesday market in Prades and Eux, which is very close and had some wonderful hiking.
Finally I would say, if you have the choice, to request the upper apartment, as it has a view from its roof deck (the lower terrace is large, but quite closed in), and noise is a bit of an issue if both apartments are occupied.

A beautiful holiday destination

Veejay27 Liverpool
Review Submitted: November 15, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We spent a wonderful week here last summer - I chose it because of the glowing description and photos of the town - and we certainly were not disappointed. Staying in the medieval town of Villefranche is an amazing experience with the apartment's patio actually adjoining the ancient wall of the town.
There is a lot to do in the town with quaint shops and friendly people. Fort Liberia, overlooking the town high up on the hill, is an awesome place to visit. We took the Jeep up there by road, and after exploring the fort, came down the long undercover staircase back to the town.
Another highly recommended day out was a spectacular journey on the "Little Yellow Train" which winds its way up the valley through the most amazing scenery. The open carriages were great for photography - although the closed ones were not so breezy. Another day we walked inside the wall of the town through endless corridors full of arrow slits, a fascinating experience.
The apartment was very nicely furnished and well equipped, although I wished we'd brought some DVDs with us as the TV has no signal. The patio was great for barbecues and nearby supermarket (Lidl) and market town made food shopping very reasonable. The only annoying thing was the number of houseflies buzzing in and out - but we did get pretty good with the swatter.

Villefranche was very easy to find from Perpignan airport. The owner was very helpful both in communication beforehand and meeting up with us to show us the ropes. In all it's a holiday I'd highly recommend and we certainly would think about coming again ourselves.

Wonderful village and great hospitality

Review Submitted: April 23, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
We (family of four) spent five days in Shona's wonderful Tet apartment in Villefranche. Though we didnt meet Shona in person, she prepared the apartment perfectly for our arrival, gave us great advice in our correspondences, and refered us to a wonderful woman who lives nearby who helped us with the few questions we did have.
The apartment is beautifully furnished, well equiped, and very comfortable. The other unit was not occupied so the place was very quiet.
The village itself is almost fairytale perfect, there's great hiking in the vicinity, and the region is layered with history. Only problems - you have to leave the village in order to stock up on supplies, and there are many tourists walking about (which you, of course, are not....)
Since it is an old house there were a few technical mishaps during our stay, which would have been more easily solved if Shona was present (tv and heating issues). Even so, they did not mar our stay.
If you want to get away from it all, enjoy a beautiful part of France, and spend some quality time with your family - this is the place. We recommend it highly.
