Set in the beautiful department of Languedoc-Roussillon, which lays claim to 134 miles of beaches, and over 300 sunny days a year, the medieval fortified village of Villefranche is: 50 minutes from the Mediterranean coast, 50 minutes from the ski slopes, 1 hour 10 minutes from the Spanish border and 1 hour 50 minutes from Andorra. The village occupies a prized location at the confluence of the Cady and Tet Rivers and lies at the base of three mountains, one of these being the sacred mountain of the Catalans, Mount Canigou. As you approach the village, you see only its ramparts and fortifications, which, founded in 1092, have remained untouched by subsequent development. Its civic architecture, (22 thirteenth- and fourteenth century facades are registered as historical monuments), is as well preserved as its military ramparts. Within its walls, the village comprises a series of medieval lanes with beautiful wrought iron signs identifying the numerous shops and restaurants.

DAYS OUT IN VILLEFRANCHE: Built into the mountainside high above the village, FORT LIBERIA was designed by the military engineer Vauban in the seventeenth century to protect the valuable position of Villefranche after the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees established the new Franco-Spanish border close by. The fort can be accessed by the four-wheel drive Landrover which does trips throughout the day, by walking around the mountain, or via a subterranean stairway comprising 742 steps. From Villefranche you can catch the charming PETIT TRAIN JAUNE, through the Pyrenees. With open-air carriages in the summer, spectacular views of plunging mountainsides and steep gorges, the train passes through the highest station in France (5,000ft above sea level). Estimated at between 30 and 400 million years old, spectacular CAVES, just outside the village walls, have amazing stalactites and stalagmites, and run sound and light shows every evening during July and August. The CITY WALLS are great fun for kids. MUSHROOM MUSEUM

DAYS OUT WITHIN 5 MILES OF THE VILLAGE: The 7 acre CASTEIL ANIMAL PARK boasts many animals including lions, bears, wolves, monkeys and wallabies, amongst others. Described as the Paradise of the Pyrenees, VERNET LES BAINS is a chocolate box picture of a village. A thermal spa resort, it is officially designated as a centre for green tourism. Enjoying a micro-climate, it has the first Village Arboretum in France, with over 1,500 trees planted throughout the village including some 200 different species. The village also has a geological museum with a fine collection of specimens including remarkable crystals and marine fossils. For families there is an open-air swimming pool which is open throughout the summer months, tennis courts and the grand total of four lovely playparks. Ramblers and mountain bilkers will find many superb tracks signposted around the village, and for mountaineers, the imposing Mount Canigou beckons! PRADES is the nearest sizeable town to Villefranche, and holds a large weekly market.

FURTHER AFIELD: The world famous ST MARTIN OF CANIGOU is easil accessed from Villefranche. There is a SWIMMING LAKE at Vinca, about 15 minutes drive from the village, with pedaloes and bouncy castle during the summer months. Miles of beautiful sandy BEACHES are to be found within 50 minutes drive of the village. At St. Thomas-Les-Bains, about half an hour's drive away, incredible outdoor THERMAL POOLS in a wonderful mountain setting are accessible to all for the princely sum of 5 Euros!! For ladies, a comprehensive range of massage and beauty treatments are also on offer here. The “Neiges Catalan” incorporate a number of SKIING resorts within 1 hour’s drive of Villefranche, and comprise: • 110 ski lifts • 190 runs • 278km of ski slopes • 1320 snow cannons • 348km of cross-country The larger resorts include Les Angles, Pyrenees 2000, Formigueres, and Font Romeu.

Ski: The “Neiges Catalan” incorporate a number of SKIING resorts within 1 hour’s drive of Villefranche, and comprise: • 110 ski lifts • 190 runs • 278km of ski slopes • 1320 snow cannons • 348km of cross-country The larger resorts include Les Angles, Pyrenees 2000, Formigueres, and Font Romeu. At Font Romeu, lift passes are free for children under the age of 6, representing a significant saving on a family ski holiday. As of November some of the resorts are already open with snow cover, and the long-term snow forecast is very good. It is possible to take an independent ski break here without a vehicle, as the Petit Train Jaune runs daily to Font Romeu. Additionally, a newly launched bus service will, on 3 days per week initially, collect skiers from Villefranche, to arrive at Les Angles for 9.30am, departing at 5.30pm. A car nevertheless provides the opportunity to explore further afield, and perhaps have a day skiing in Andorra, or visit the thermal baths at St. Thomas.

Classy apartment in a beautiful old town

TommyB Sheffield, UK
Review Submitted: November 17, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We came to Villefranche in late summer with two families with small babies and had a great time. The owners (Ted and Shona) were extremely helpful and the apartment was clean and well-equipped. The rooms had a lovely old feel about them, and I would definitely recommend it to my friends.

One bonus for me was the apartment bike (in fact I think there were three) which I used for some quick trips up into the hills. There were also some kids toys which Peter (2) loved, and a small knight in armour on the stairs which he's still talking about three months later.

Villefranche is a very beautiful village with cobbled streets, friendly natives and some nice restaurants. At night, when the tourists drifted away, we felt very lucky to be able to stay in this ancient place. The rooftop terrace in particular is very atmospheric and a great spot to sit back with a glass or two and watch the stars.

One really fun day trip we did was to catch the `petit train jaune' from the village station (check it out on youtube!). Other days we spent swimming in mountain pools, and going for walks in the hills.

Week in January 2009

Review Submitted: November 16, 2009 Date of Stay: January 2009
Amazing apartment. Fantastic customer service from the hosts. We spent a lovely week in this marvellous area. The flat could not be more centrally located within the medieval walls. You can walk to about 5 attractions and the road and train network is easy. Le petit train jaune and its amazing route is charming and spectacular. We were supplied with kindling and logs for the beautiful open fire (this was topped up before we could even ask by Ted who was always ready to help). All dealings with the owners were quick, simple, straightforward and reliable. Recommend very highly.

Charming Apartment in a medieval walled town

Phil & Sarah Suffolk
Review Submitted: November 16, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
My wife and I stayed in the Tet appartment for just over a week in mid May. We had originally planned a sailing holiday in Brittany, but when these fell through and with ferries already booked, we decided to head further south for better weather.
Before we left the UK we received excellent directions from Shona who met us on arrival and provided us with a welcome pack including wine. She also gave us contact details in case of any problems (of which there were none)
The apartment is on a small street within the walled town of Villefranche. Each of the rooms was tastefully furnished and suited to the historic setting. It also contained a modern bathroom with jacussi. One of the bedrooms overlooked the boulangerie which we visited every morning whenever it was open (not open every day).
Initially we thought parking would be a problem, but this did not prove to be the case. Although the car could be left outside the apartment overnight, we parked outside the town walls and brought the car in to load and unload. An added bonus was being able to use the two bicycles at no additional charge, but it should be noted that these are shared with the other apartment.
We were blessed with sunny weather so having a roof terrace (up a narrow staircase) was a real bonus. Having breakfast on the roof was delightful with beautiful views of the town and overlooking fort. We are glad we chose Tet, as the lower apartment just had a courtyard which didn't get much sun.
As we were out of peak season, much of Villefranche closed at night. We didn't eat out in Villefranche but found some nice restaurants in Vernet les Bains and wonderful seafood at Port Vendres (just beyond the very popular Collioure).

A great adventure

Rd550 Carlisle
Review Submitted: October 16, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
This was the first trip abroad with our girls (2yrs & 6months), so was slightly daunting. It was great to arrive in Villefranche de Conflent and find such a charming safe place. The gite (Cady) is lovely. Tasteful decor, traditional furniture with contempry kitchen and showerooms. The place was immaculate and Ted & Shona couldn't do enough, providing all the extras required for a baby.
The fully enclosed patio provided an excellent safe outside play area and when the munchkins finally went to sleep it was lovely to sit out, relax & enjoy a glass of wine.
The village is so full of character and great to explore especially the walls and fort. The locals are extemely friendly & we really liked the bakery lady and the old man who walks his feret.
There is loads to do and see locally and would appeal very much to outdoor types wanting some adventure without the crowds of the Alps. There is a large supermarket just down the road in Prades & even a Lydll so stocking up on rations is easy.
We are looking forward to visiting again, probably in the sking season with a few friends. Theres loads of room.
Thanks again Ted & Shona
