Photos and Description of this Abruzzo holiday villa Self-catering holiday villa in an olive grove private location, sleeps 6-8

A beautiful renovated farmhouse on the edge of a large village in the foothills of the Maiella mountains. It provides the perfect holiday hideaway in a wooded landscape. At the end of a secluded lane, it has stunning panoramic views in 3 directions, of Lake Bomba, the mountains and the Sangro valley with the sea beyond. The house is surrounded on all sides by an old olive grove of over 1 acre, ensuring privacy. You can have a barbecue on the terrace overlooking your pool, which measures 9m x 4.5m and nestles between the trees. Thick walls and wooden shutters protect the interior from temperature extremes. The interior has tiled floors and white walls. Most rooms have vaulted ceilings or wooden beams. Upstairs, enjoy a meal or a glass of wine on the large balcony while taking in the view. You can pick mulberries and figs when in season. (Advert for 4 bedroom property includes owners apartment.)

Casolare della Quercia is on the outskirts of Roccascalegna, a large village famous for one of the most spectacular castles in Abruzzo. The mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop to the village. There are several local shops, café/bars, and a number of good restaurants and agriturismi in the area, offering local food and wine at reasonable prices. Beaches within easy reach are good for swimming, safe for children. At Fossacessia you can see the famous trabocchi, traditional stilt-constructions suspended above the sea for fishing. The hills and small villages around Lake Bomba are well worth exploring, and there are many vantage points which afford stunning views of the lake. A short drive away is Cascate del Verde, the second highest waterfall in Italy. Historic towns such as Guardiagrele and Sulmona are within easy reach, through areas of outstanding natural beauty. In the summer, there are many traditional festivals, often involving local Italian food and live music.

Excellent base for sun bathing and sight seeing!

Review Submitted: October 15, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
The farmhouse is perfectly situated within the centre of the Abruzzo. Large towns and cities are about 20 minutes away as is the beach. The local village is superb with an excellent butcher, baker, cafes and convenience stores but best of all are the people there who are all friendly and welcoming.

We stayed for the last week of September and first week in October and the weather was excellent. We were really grateful of the pool.

Overall we were very impressed with the house and the location and are planning a return trip next year.

The villa and pool are lovely and the view of the lake is beautiful. However this is totally spoilt by the garden which is little more than a building site. On arrival, you are greeted by tarpaulin and a concrete mixer and the house is effectively surrounded by rubble and bricks! We would also strongly recommend that families with children under the age of 7 do not stay here due to the 15 foot drop at the back of the garden, which has no fencing to protect a fall. The electics are also unfinished in the villa and positively dangerous!! The villa is totally overpriced, particularly in peak season compared to all the other villas we have stayed in around Europe in recent years. Not a good advert for Holday Rentals!
Owner's Response: The villa is a fairly new venture and we have been making improvements to the outside area. We regret that some building materials were left in one part; we had expected that they would have been removed before guests arrived. We will certainly arrange for them to be removed when we visit in October. We will also make sure the slope is fenced off.
The electrics are completely safe and up to date, and fitted with the latest safety devices (rcd + mcb circuit breakers).Houses in Italy are supplied with only 3kW electricity, and use of too many electrical devices at once leads to a cut in supply.
We take criticism very seriously and we are making an effort to ensure that the above points are addressed without delay. We agree that the villa and pool are lovely, and the improvements we are making will ensure a quality experience for our visitors in 2010.

We arrived at Casolare della Quercia in the dark after about a 40 min drive from Pescara airport. After a quick look round the house (which is lovely) we went to bed. Nothing prepared me for for my first view of Roccascalegna from the bedroom window. I opened the shutters the sunlight hit my face, and then the stunning view WOW!! It is just sensational. The house is beautiful, it has everything you need. It is surrounded by an olive grove and in the distance is Lake Bomba with the mountains behind. The Pool looks fab but we were there in April so too cool for us to swim. But we did eat outside under the Mulberry trees. The House is in a very private location which is great for that get away from it all feeling. The locals are very nice and like you to practise your Italian. There are plenty of places to eat and drink very reasonably. We did have an eating experience of 5 hours eating course(smallish) after course of fantastic home cooked food. The English couple who "caretake" the property are fantastic, they are very helpful and can tell you the best places to visit whether its walking, beaches or eating out. I can't rate this place enough. It was absolute magic watching spring unfold here.

I stayed at the farmhouse June 2008 and was not disappointed. I went with a group of friends and found its location and the level of privacy ideal.
The property has been refurbished to a really high standard and a lot of time and thought has gone into the restoration.
If you are looking for the real Italy and want to eat and drink where the locals do, this is just for you (local restaurants and bars in the nearby village).
Set amid the hills and mountains of this beautiful region, wherever you are you can not fail to love the scenery.
With the close proximity to the beach (30mins) and Lake Bomba (15mins) there is plenty to hand to keep you entertained, should you wish to leave your own private grounds and the perfectly sized pool!!
I would love to return this summer with the family - even the extended family as there is definitely enough room..

A nice, newly refurbished property with stunning views, and great privacy. Lovely pool. Totally unspoilt area, few tourists (so a little Italian would help, although locals are very friendly), a chance to see real Italian life. Plenty of restaurants within a short driving distance, and very cheap to eat out.
