If you are looking for all night action and excitement then this is probably not the place for you. If however, the thought of dappled shade, your favourite book and a glass of rose, is your idea of holiday bliss - then you will probably love this peaceful corner on the edge of the Haut Languedoc. This is the hidden Mediterranean – the narrow Jaur valley, before the Massif Central rises up behind us. Ruggedly beautiful but not completely isolated. You can sit on the terrace and watch birds of prey wheel above you, wander up the mountain to get a view out over the surrounding countryside of cherry orchards, vineyards and garrigue or just sit in the sun and do nothing. For the more energetic there is fantastic canoeing on the Orb, mountain biking, horse-riding or walks above the forest floor. You could take a curative spa at Lamalou les Bains or even play a round of golf.

  • The main house has one bedroom on the first floor. There are two annex bedrooms both with single mezzanine beds. One also has a simple sofa bed. Very close to house. Superb for independent older children, teenagers or friends. One of these rooms doubles up as a games room We have now added a new bedroom in the cool garden room -connected to the main house by external steps

Notes: Really flexible accommodation. We can supply groceries on arrival. Wine fridge in the house with honesty box. Main entrance to kitchen with living room off. Comfortable living room with wood burning stove for out of season lets. (We can provide wood if you need it.) Living room has beds so can be used as additional sleeping accommodation. Back hall with door to outside terraces, shower room and stairs to spacious bedroom with double bed and single bed. Outside staircase leads to two converted stone 'secadous' (chestnut drying rooms) made into additional single bedrooms. (Ideal for teenagers). One doubles up as games room with dvd's and PS2. The house is full of books and children's toys. There is a cool, light and airy double 'garden' bedroom connected to house by external staircase. Pretty garden with lawns (if not scorched by the sun), trees to climb, fruit and flowers. Numerous secluded terraces in both sun and shade. The swimming pool provides a welcome place to cool down

There are also many original paintings in the property and many of these are available for sale For us what is so magic here are the amazing skies, the fantastic selection of fresh produce from the local shops and markets, the tranquillity and, of course, the sunshine. This unconventional stone property offers flexible accommodation and a real breath of fresh air.

Key points and local attractions: Beautiful scenery and mountain walks. Fabulous fresh produce markets. Bird watching, wine tasting, open air cinema, arts centre. Cultural activities (local fetes) through out the summer. Well stocked epicerie and boulangerie 1.5km. Museum of pre-history at St Pons. Caving, mountaineering and abseiling opportunities close by. Golf and Casino at Lamalou les Bains (thermal town). Gorges d’Heric and Plateau des Lacs close by. Mediterranean beaches are an easy day trip. Within striking distance Carcassonne, Beziers, Pezanas.

Olargues: Officially one of France's Most Beautiful Towns is 15 minutes drive away.

Upon arriving at the road to the house we were concerned that we had taken a wrong turn as it was a relatively steep narrow road but we used the supplied map which got us to the door of the property without a problem.

The path is fairly steep up to the house but worth it. The house is beautifully decorated and very welcoming. A well supplied kitchen if you want to cook and a barbeque outside. A very comfortable living room with plenty of books and a radio/CD player. My teenage children made good use of the two 'annex' type bedrooms and also what they called the 'Bat Cave' which was cool in the heat of the day with plenty for them to do (particularly on the PS2).

Views were wonderful and the house gets the sun the whole day and there is very little sound other than the wildlife in the area. There are plenty of levels to enjoy eating at the house as there are four different area's that have tables and chairs.

Within a short drive there are a number of lagoons that can be visited which provide excellent swimming and picnicing areas, or it is possible to drive up to the lakes in the mountain where you can swim or hire a kayak or just laze around under a tree.

In less than an hour you can get to beaches on the coast at Beziers, or visit Carcassonne. Within a 10 minute drive you can get to Olargues which is a beautiful medieval village which was well worth a visit.

There were markets and festivals all around the area which were also worth a visit if you enjoy seeing the French way of life.

Perpignan was around an hour and twenty minutes away and worth a visit but there is plenty to do within the area that the house is in.

The house is central to Perpignan/Toulouse/Montpellier airports.

The owners were excellent and very helpful and close by in case there were any problems.

So in summary, if you want a peaceful holiday where you can swim and relax whilst in beautiful surroundings then this may be what you need .........
