Good value for money in central Livorno, Tuscany

The location of the apartment is very good, making it easy for commuting on the buses (bus stop at the top of the street) and to the train station also for town centre shopping.
The property was very clean and well maintained, shower was a bit dodgy running hot and cold but other than that it was an excellent apartment with every amenity that you could possibly require (washer, iron, hairdryer, sheets and towels galore).
The owner was lovely, friendly and helpful and her husband picked us up from the airport and took us back, which I thought was very thoughtful as we had not travelled to Livorno/Italy before.
Every day there are markets, one next to the apartment and the other a few streets away (near the cathedral).
Outside from the apartment is a lovely ice cream shop and coffee/drinking places with a small shop just around the corner for water and fresh bread.
Livorno is a bustling city with lovely historical buildings, Municipio (town hall), Cathedral and canal, the Piazza del Repubblica is a central spot for people to congregate in the evenings with seating around a large square with statues at either end (where the canal goes under the street).
For a first holiday to Italy it was lovely and I would personally recommend a visit.
The only downsides were the cost of goods, the pound was very poor, the exchange rate was £100 = 109e and food was quite expensive, having to pay for your seating on the beaches (15e) and the heat as there is no air conditioning.
However, you must visit Firenze (Florence) and Pisa if you like historical buildings, they are amazing, also the funicula railway at Montenerro.
Viareggio further up the coast was lovely, there is a delightful crepe shop on the front whose proprieter spoke excellent English and was very helpful, the food was good too!
It is an auatomated system to buy your train tickets which is brilliant, not having to wait in queues also you have to buy bus tickets prior to travel but dont forget to validate them when you get on the bus.
The tourist information office is in Via del Grande about 5 mins away from the apartment and from here the bus station is not far from Macdonalds, I can highly recommend the cappacino milkshake 1e, lush!
Have a wonderful time in Italy, arrivederci xx
