PARADISE, EASILY REACHED
Man’s only real conquest on the Eolie Islands is its travel connections with the rest of . Today they can easily be reached with ships and hydrofoils from Naples, Reggio Calabria, Palermo, Messina and especially from Milazzo which is a city that can be easily reached by train and car after passing the straight of Messina . However, as mentioned earlier, this conquest did not result in a visible archipelago change. It is almost as if everyone that comes to the island is bewitched by the environment.
Vulcano
It is a 21km2 black island, with an active volcano, sulphur springs and miraculous mud. It looks like the gateway to hell but it in reality is like heaven. Its most known characteristic is its plateau, which is the largest of all the plateau’s on the Eolie Islands . A lovely panorama can be seen from Capo Grillo. Apart from the attractive customary visit to the big crater that hangs over the east port, another panorama not to miss is the Valle dei Mostri panorama, at Vulcanello precisely at the Punta del Roveto, where there are extraordinary concretions of lava on black sand. But only by travelling around the entire island, can one truly admire the Vulcano’s beauty: the West Coast, from Cala del Formaggio to Grotta del Cavallo, to Capo Sevvo, from Gelso with its hot spring beaches beside the port.
LIPARI: THE CAPITAL
The biggest (37.6 km2) and the most convenient for tourists. Its centre is full of shops. It is a must for those who let themselves get captured by antiquity. The famous Eolian Museum is situated at the top of the high ground (the Rocca) that hangs over the port, inside the Spanish castle. Every morning its twenty seven rooms full of treasures, red and black painted ceramics, prehistoric findings, bronze and oxidised jewellery, bas-relief, amphora’s, Greek theatrical masks, sarcophagus's and tombs, are opened to the public. Those who visit the Famous Eoliano Museum will feel as if they are walking through at least six civilisations. This is yet another island known for its unforgettable excursions-unforgettable due to its landscapes, including the Quatrocchi landscape, from which the Faraglioni and the smoking Volcano can be seen (from its high-altitude coast) and Monte Pelata, from which Campo Bianco (pumice mountains that go down towards the sea) can be seen.
