As well as its active nightlife and sandy coves, Albufeira attracts visitors to its historic sights. Named as ‘the castle in the sea’ by the Moors in the 8th century, it was a fortified stronghold many centuries ago. The Church of Sao Sebastiao on Praca Miguel Bombarda has some beautiful features including a notable Manueline doorway.

Faro Old Town - This ancient walled city is a delightful place to explore from your self catering villa in Pera, and it is just 40km away. Once a trading port, Faro has both Arab and Roman ruins. The golden church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo certainly lives up to its name with wonderful gold leaf woodwork. Visit the 13th century Cathedral in the square and the beautiful Episcopal Palace nearby. During the summer there is entertainment near the marina, and just outside the town there is a modern shopping centre and multiplex cinema showing films in English.

The tiny Portuguese village of Guia was at one time a site of pilgrimage where travellers would make their vow to Our Lady of Guia. Home to Cliff Richard, and offering over 20 excellent restaurants, it is a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours. See the Roman bridge and finish the day at the local Zoomarine water and theme park.
