Perranporth is a popular surfing and sand yachting destination with a large sandy beach facing the Atlantic in North Cornwall. It is situated on the coastline between Porthtowan and Newquay. At low tide the sands reach as far as Ligger Point. The Cornish name for this village is Saint Piran's cove named after the patron saint of Cornwall and his cross features on the white on black county flag.

Perranporth once had many guest houses and hotels but many have been converted to self catering accommodation and surf pods, as more people have turned to camping and caravan holidays. Even the Ponsmere Hotel with its amazing location on the beach has closed and is to be redeveloped. The four-day New Age festival held there in November each year has been moved to the Sands in Newquay.

This does not mean it is difficult to find good quality accommodation in Perranporth, as there are numerous holiday cottages that are far more comfortable than a caravan, yet competitive price wise. Legend has it that Saint Piran founded the church (the "Lost Church") on Perranporth sands, in the seventh century and there are plans to unearth it once again. Golf cottages are available at the fine links golf course in Perranporth, a championship course with breathtaking coastal views. A seaside cottage is the perfect resting place after a day walking the coastal path, surfing, fishing, horse riding, shopping in Truro or Plymouth or just lazing on the beach.

This is Poldark country so you can be sure of a warm welcome when you arrive at you holiday cottage and there is a tourist information bureau in Newquay. There are a number of local shops pubs, restaurants and a Co-Op. Places to eat out include the Green Parrot restaurant, which has two bars, beer garden and serves fresh local produce and local real ales. Masterchef host John Torode and Rolf Munding owns the Seiners Arms restaurant on the beachfront.

Penhale sand dunes on the north side of the beach near Holywell Bay are used for orienteering championships and Mobius Bike Trails offer Cross-country Mountain biking as well as multi activity days. There are certain times of the year when you will need to book Perranporth cottages early. These include Lownder Peran, a popular inter Celtic festival that attracts musicians, dancers and poets, which is held yearly in October and the St Piran's two day events in March.

Perranzabuloe Folk Museum offers insight into the industrial and social history of Perranporth and surrounding districts with displays on fishing, surfing, costume, farming and an imitation Cornish kitchen. Other places to visit from cottages in Perranporth include Newquay Zoo, Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro, Pendennis Castle in Falmouth, St Mawes Castle, China Clay Country Park, Carthew in St Austell and Trebah Garden at Mawnan Smith.

The weather in Perranporth is mild like the rest of Cornwall, but will feel chilly when the north wind blows off the Atlantic Ocean.

Newquay and Plymouth airports serve Perranporth and National Express have a direct link from London. The nearest mainline railway station is at Truro and bus operators in the area include First and Greyhound. If you are arriving by private plane there is a civil airfield in Perranporth that is also used for gliding.
