Under Roman rule, Peschiera del Garda was one of the most important fortified towns in the region, and evidence of this remains to this very day. Medieval palaces and external fortifications can still be seen around the town, which is enclosed by pentagon-shaped city walls and totally surrounded by water, giving it an almost impregnable image.
A number of activities are waiting to be enjoyed on and around the lake, including sailing, water skiing, jet skiing, walking, hiking and cycling. If these all sound a bit energetic for you, the good news is that there are more relaxing ways to explore this beautiful area, and pleasure boat cruises around the lake are easily arranged.
Many people love to explore the region by car, but for something a little bit different head out on your bicycle. Peschiera del Garda marks the start of a 40km long cycling lane, which runs all the way to Mantova and follows the river for the majority of the way, making it an incredibly scenic route.
When it comes to family fun, one of the biggest attractions in the area is Gardaland, just a short journey away at Castelnuovo del Garda. This is essentially Lake Garda’s answer to Disneyland, with rollercoasters, stalls, shops and entertainment for visitors of all ages.
