South Dordogne and Plaisance

Whether the aim of your holidays be to relax, to tour around the area by car or visit on foot or bicycle, to discover our numerous historical sites, to participate in various sporting activities or sample the food and wine for which the Périgord is reputed, you will have an embarrassing choice to choose from.

The old ‘bastide’ towns of Eymet, Beaumont, Monflanquin, Monpazier (probably the best preserved) are all within close reach. Some of them were founded by the English and were much disputed over in the struggles of the Hundred Years War. Other medieval towns such as Bergerac and Issigeac charm the visitor with their little squares, half-timbered and stone houses and narrow streets.

Not to be forgotten are the numerous ‘châteaux’, be they castles, fortified houses or renaissance residences, which have so heavily marked our local history: Monbazillac, Lanquais, Duras, Lauzun, Beynac, Castelnau, Bonaguil, Biron amongst others.

For the children (and adults too!) there are a wide range of ‘bases de loisirs’, often situated by a lake, offering swimming, sporting and leisure activities for the whole family. Other sporting facilities and activities include canoeing, golf (Chateau de Vigiers, Castelnau, Tombeboeuf and Issigeac), rambling and cycling, ballooning, go-karting. In Plaisance there is the well-known, friendly riding stables ‘La Cavaille’.

Summer in this part of the Dordogne means village fairs and festivals: wine fairs, medieval festivals, village and barn fairs, antique and bric-a-brac fairs. A warm welcome is reserved for visitors.

Other beautiful sites, further afield in the Perigord, are nonetheless accessible in one or two hours’ drive: the underground caverns (grottes) of the Périgord Noir (such as Lascaux) home for Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon man, the enchanting medieval town of Sarlat, the wild country of the ‘causses’, the wine-famous town of St. Emilion, the industrious and historical Périgueux.
