Things to do on holiday in Pollensa, Majorca

Forget the crowded beaches, large hotels, and British pubs which parts of the Balearic Islands became famous for, and enjoy the more traditional side of the beautiful island of Majorca. Founded in the 13th century, Pollensa (also spelt Pollenca), was built nearly 4 miles away from the coast in order to better defend itself from pirate attacks. Though there’s no danger of pirate attacks now, this pretty town has become one of Majorca’s most desirable locations for holiday apartments and villas because of the more relaxed way of life here.

Many of the buildings in Pollensa were built during medieval times, in the 17th and 18th centuries, so the narrow, cobbled streets transport you back to times gone by. The main square (Placa Major) is a popular place to sip a drink and watch the world go by, overseen by the large 13th century church that stands over the square and was built by the Templars. Pollensa is most famous for its Good Friday Procession when the streets become full of locals and tourists. Climbing the 365 steps to the chapel on top of the hill is popular and offers a wonderful view, or for a longer walk, the 3 to 4 hour hike on the Cami Vell del Far takes hikers to secluded beaches and beautiful scenery.

Find a fantastic Pollensa villa and you probably won’t want to venture too far from Pollensa itself, though if you’re longing for the beach there’s a great one just a few miles away! Port de Pollenca (or Puerto Pollenca as it’s also known) is one of the top resort towns on this northern coast of Mallorca. You’ll find restaurants, shops, a nice marina, and more here.

Other nearby attractions include Cap de Formenter, at the furthest northern point of Majorca, and the resort town of Alcudia. Alcudia’s old town features Roman ruins plus there’s the S’Albufera National Park.

The weather in Pollensa, Majorca

Staying in a Pollensa apartment during the summer you’ll benefit from dry, hot, sunny days typical of a Mediterranean climate. Average highs in the summer range from 20C (68F) in May to 29C (84F) in August, and are only slightly cooler at night. Winters, though mild, do experience rainfall and because of this there are far less tourists demanding Pollensa villas and apartments during the winter.

Many charter and budget airlines offer flights to the main city, Palma de Mallorca, including Easyjet who fly from multiple UK airports.
