Make a holiday rental property or self catering cottage in Polperro, Cornwall your home away from home

Polperro is a thirteenth century fishing village situated on the River Pol on the south east coast of Cornwall. It is four miles from Looe and twenty-five miles from Plymouth. It has a quaint fishing harbour surrounded by crooked cottages with narrow winding streets. It is a popular tourist haunt in the summer months. Although it is now a peaceful fishing cove, Polperro was once the centre of Cornwall's smuggling activity.

Places to stay in Polperro

Tourism is now the main industry in Polperro and many of the fishermen's cottages have been turned into self-catering holiday rentals. Polperro attracts many artists and photographers and coastal cottages present an ideal way to explore Cornwall and enjoy all that this beautiful seaside port has to offer. A rather unique way to travel in Polperro is the Horse Bus, which runs from the main car park to the centre of the village.

Polperro Heritage Museum is located amidst the holiday cottages in the Warren overlooking the harbour. It has an extraordinary collection of exhibits and numerous old photographs that vividly bring to life the history of this Cornish fishing village. You may even be able to pick out your holiday cottage in the old photographs, as from the exterior the cottages in Polperro have changed very little over the years.

Fishing is still popular with holidaymakers and you can charter a boat for fishing trips at neighbouring Looe for two-hour mackerel trips. There's nothing like catching fresh fish to take back to your self-catering accommodation to cook. If you are planning to fish by rod and reel from the pier, then the best time is two and a half hours each side of high water. The main species of fish in the area are Pollack, Dogfish, Conger, Wrasse, Garfish, Bass and Mackerel.

Things to do in Polperro

There are so beautiful walks around Polperro and two mentioned in Landfall walks by Bob Acton are a circular walk passing through Talland as you walk eastward. The second is a longer circular walk passing through Lansallos as you walk westward and both take in part of the coastal path. On a clear night you can see a white light flashing at the Eddystone Lighthouse near Devonport Naval Dockyard.

Polperro art studios have a range of workshop tutorials to allow visitors the opportunity to develop their artistic talents. Festival week is at the end of June and a favourite day out is to visit Fowey. The Fowey estuary is teeming with craft of all sizes from global freighters to rowing boats. Polruan is connected to Fowey by passenger ferry, but there is a vehicle ferry at Bodinnick.

Polperro offers a variety of places to eat cafes, pubs and classy restaurants, such as the Crumplehorn Inn and Mill. Local attractions to visit from your holiday cottage include the Eden Project, Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary, the Monkey Sanctuary, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Geevor Tin Mine, St Austell Brewery and Bodmin and Wexford Railway.

Weather in Polperro

Polperro's climate is mild and it is well sheltered from the prevailing southwest winds. Spring, summer and autumn days can be warm, pleasant or even hot. Winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing, but the area is likely to be affected by winter gales and storms.

Travel to Polperro

Polperro is served by Plymouth and Newquay airports and the nearest mainline train and National Express stop is at Liskeard. Hambly's Coaches and Western Greyhound buses provide a good local service for the summer months.
