Pontrieux - "Petite cite de Caractere"

Pontrieux, a picturesque cobbled town straddling the River Trieux at its highest navigable point is the ideal base for your Breton holiday. Only 20 minutes’ drive, and you can find one of the most stunning coastlines that Brittany can offer you: on one side the Pink Granite Coast with fascinating rock formations and islands and on the other the Goelo coast extending for miles, with walkable coastal paths and beautiful sandy beaches for bathing. This area is renowned for its delicious cuisine of fish, shellfish, and of course Breton cider and pastries!

Along the estuaries there are beautiful paths for walking or cycling, and from the bays and beaches there is wind-surfing or sailing. Not so energetic? Then drive to the picturesque fishing ports nearby (excellent uncrowded roads, by the way!), and what about a boat trip round the famous "seven islands"? Enjoying the views of puffins, and seals, in the breath-taking open-air panorama of the biggest natural bird sanctuary in France. From Paimpol, (a 20 minute steam train journey from Pontrieux) you are able to visit the Isle de Brehat, famous for its beautiful fauna and car free roads. Nearby is the beautiful Chateau de la Roche Jagu, with its 70 hectares of extensive gardens overlooking the Trieux estuary, and the Abbaye de Beauport at Paimpol. The historic cathedral towns of Treguier and Guingamp with their popular weekly markets, are only 15 minutes’ drive away.

But after an enjoyable day of sightseeing, swimming, sailing or sampling the cider (or whatever you’ve chosen to do!), come back to Pontrieux and take a break at the town’s little port, admiring the estuary, and the yachts nosing their way up to the marina. Relax with a meal or drink at a cafe on the quayside, and plan your next day……..a variety of things to do await you, and all within a stone’s throw from Pontrieux!!
