The ancient Roman city of Porto Torres was known as Turris Libyssonis. Some ancient remains can still be seen, including the existing port, the aqueduct, the forum and some temples which are still in good condition. Other ancient remains can be seen in the Palazzo del Re Barbaro, including the charming Holy Trinity of Saccargia church. The Barbaric King’s Palace was the most important thermal bath building, dating back to the 1st century. Even the new Town Hall was formerly the Duke of Asinara Palace.

One of the most important Roman buildings which still remains in Porto Torres is the Basilica of St Gavino. The basilica dates back to the 11th century, along with the nearby Necropolis which has more than 20 burial chambers hewn out of the rock.

The bridge over the Mannu River is also a Roman structure, and is still in use today. There are no less than 8 museums in and around Porto Torres. The Turritano Antiquarium holds an interesting collection of artifacts and is well worth a visit.
