The tiny medieval village of Preggio is an increasingly popular holiday destination located 18km south-west of the town of Umbertide, Italy. A major reason for this surge in popularity is the increasing reputation of both the August Preggio Music Festival and the excellent Preggio Chestnut Festival, which is held every October. The village itself is surrounded by chestnut trees, in a hilltop setting around 600 metres above sea level, so is also a great base for walking and hiking holidays.

October is one of the busiest times of year in this part of Umbria, as it is when the Preggio Festival takes place. The main theme of the festival is chestnuts, which provide an excellent warming snack as the temperatures start to drop in the evenings. Local residents open up their houses and cook up a selection of local dishes, which are served on the streets to hungry residents and visitors. These meals go down a treat with a glass of novella wine.

Eating and drinking are a big part of local life, and Preggio has a some excellent restaurants. These include Ristorante La Castagna and Ristorante Locanda Di Nonna Gelsa, which are located close to eachother in the village centre. For something a little different try the Cinghiale (wild boar) - which is usually served with delicious crusty bread or fresh homemade pasta.

The Chestnut festival is not the only Preggio festival, as there is also a popular music event every August, which focuses mainly on opera and classical music. Preggio also has a number of historical places of interest, including the 13th century Holy Trinity Church of San Francesco and the 14th century Castle Polgeto. Basic amenities can be found in the village, with more in the nearby towns and villages.

Places to visit on holiday in Preggio, Italy

Citta di Castello (35km to the north) is one of the larger towns in the region, and makes for an interesting wander with its brick buildings and picturesque setting on the banks of the River Tiber. The medieval Palazzo Comunale and the Pinacoteca Comunale art museum are two of the more interesting historical attractions on offer, and Cita di Castello also has a good selection of amenities and more modern attractions.
