Part of the vast Parc National Regional des Volcans d’Auvergne in the Auvergne department, Puy-de-Dome is a sporting haven of the highest quality. Things to do in Puy-de-Dome, France
The towering peaks of Mont Dore and Mont Dome are climbing, walking and horse riding centres of the highest quality. The volcanic peaks offer a great range of routes, from the leisurely to the fearsome, all of which afford breath-taking views across the countryside. The Puy-de-Dome stage of the Tour de France is the most gruelling of the whole competition, and for those wishing to really test their resolve, the route is open for cycling throughout the year. At the top, you are not only rewarded by spectacular views and an enormous sense of accomplishment, but also the ruins of a Roman temple to explore! Those wishing to see the temple need not attempt to reach it on foot, or from the saddle though, there is a road you can drive!
These mountains are a hotbed of activity, and the warm thermals rising up past the summits mean that hang-gliders and paragliders can be seen floating majestically miles up in the sky regularly. Those wishing to see the region from the air have plenty of options, as there are a good range of flying centres to be found. One of the most popular ways to explore from the sky is in the basket of a balloon.
For those needing, or simply wanting, a little pampering, Le Mont Dore is an excellent place to enjoy the finest of Puy-de-Dome’s spas. The thermal waters which emerge from the mountain springs are blissfully warm, and the spa centres of the region have taken full advantage, creating some of the most luxurious natural spa centres you can find.
During the winter months, the Puy de Sancy is an excellent ski resort off the usually tourist track. There are many fearsome downhill pistes to choose from, as well as wonderfully picturesque cross-country skiing trails to choose from.
