Both the Aude River and the Alet-les-Bains are good places for canoeing, white water rafting and kayaking, and horse riding, hiking, climbing and mountain biking are just some of the many activities that can be enjoyed in the surrounding Aude Valley. Your exertion will be well rewarded as you take in the stunning views as you go.
If you prefer something a little less active you can watch the sport instead of playing – rugby is extremely popular in the town, or try a spot of fishing at Mont-Bel. Quillan also boasts some excellent restaurants for a town of its size, or you can brush up on your French and enjoy a drink with the locals at one of cafe bars around the main square.
The town’s biggest annual festival is the Folklore Festival, which is held every August. Dancers from all over Europe head to Quillan for a week of music, singing and dancing, mainly around the town square. This is a great week in which to visit the town, but book your holiday rental accommodation early, otherwise you may be disappointed.

Quillan is a great base for those wishing to explore the surrounding forests of the Pyrenees and the Cathar Castles. As well as the many small towns and villages that surround Quillan, such as Nebias (9km) and Puivert (16km), consider paying a visit to the city of Limoux, 28km away, which combines culture, music and theatre with traditional markets, orchards and vineyards.

Quillan experiences a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers that peak at around 30C. Spring and autumn weather can sometimes be unpredictable, though are generally pleasant times to visit, and have at least a certain amount of sunshine. Winters are a lot colder – but that’s when the ski’s come out, and the area takes a different look to it.
Flights to Quillan, France
Carcassonne Salvaza Airport (CCF) is 40km from Quillan, and is the most convenient airport to fly to from the UK. The remainder of the journey can be made either by car or via the TGV rail network, which operates a direct service to Quillan. Another option is Rivesaltes Airport (PGF), which lies around 75km away in Perpignan. Bmibaby, Flybe and Ryanair are the three UK airlines that fly to this destination.
