Relaxing week in El Burgo

Caz73 Staines, Middx, UK
Review Submitted: November 12, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
We have just returned from a very relaxed week staying at the comfortable cottage of Casa El Palomar.

Pauline & Arthur were perfect hosts, the accommodation was spotless when we arrived. They explaining everything needed to us at first including providing maps and then leaving us to our privacy whilst being on hand for any emergencies.

Although the weather turned cooler whilst we were there, we were able to keep warm and cosy in the house, watching films, reading on the lovely upstairs sofa & generally taking it easy.

El Burgo is a pretty town with excellent fresh food available from several supermarkets, a butchers, 2 bakers & 2 fishmongers, as well as a vegetable shop. We also frequented the lovely restaurant of Gloria's for Menu of the day.

It’s a stunning part of Spain, not a word of English is spoken in the town, but don’t let that put you off – we barely speak a word of Spanish but got by with trial & error.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Caroline and David for your kind words. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay so much, and loved our village. And, so pleased that the weather was so kind, for your end October/November stay! We'll look forward to seeing you again soon! Pauline and Arthur

In search of a real Spanish experience

Lovely typically Spanish house in unspoilt village, exactly what we had been looking for. Spotlessly clean and with many thoughtfull touches. Pauline and Arthur are the perfect hosts, friendly, knowlegeable and nothing was too much trouble for them. The setting is peacefull and tranquil, all the local shops, restaurants etc are within strolling distance, try the wet fish shop when you feel like cooking in, the fish was really fresh and worth staying in for. The village is lovely to walk around, especially the paved walk along the river which was lit by lamps at night.
Do drive to Rhonda, the journey is spectacular and worth the trip alone. We have very fond memories of our short week in El Burgo and would have no hesitation in recommending Casa El Palomar to travellers in search of the real Spain.

Owner's Response: Thank you Janet and Stephen for your very kind words. We agree about the fish! Considering we are inland the quality and diversity of the fish available in the two fish shops and in the restaurants is superb and is collected from the coast daily. The other thing that we love is that they sell in the shop - and serve in the restaurants - boned fillets which are nice and easy to cook with, and easy to eat, when we're out! Pauline and Arthur

Splendid hideaway

We spent two glorious weeks at El Palomar and cannot praise it highly enough. If you want to experience timeless Spanish village life then here it is in the most tranquil of surroundings.Once clear of Malaga, the scenery on the hour or so's drive is stunning and the roads quiet even in August. The owner's discreet presence next door enabled us to make the best of the area and assisted visits to the Alhambra and elsewhere. A gentle dip in the private pool on return from an outing was so refreshing. Saunter down to a variety of small eateries or cook in as you wish - one of our best hols of many years. We walked - we sat and read - lazy days - outings - real Spain all around - Benidorm it aint!
Owner's Response: Thank you Alan and Alison for your kind words. We now have Pepe's cafe/restaurant/tapas bar too that has just opened on the edge of the village on the Ronda road. It serves wonderful homemade tapas displayed on the bar, or you can choose a 'plate' chalked up on the board or enjoy a full 3-course menu - inside and out - all day long. It is a wonderful enhancement to the village and has been a favourite with our guests this year - especially as the 'menu del dia' at lunch-time is just 7 euros, incl wine and bread! All drinks are 1 euro - anywhere in the village - whether it is coffee, beer or wine! So, eating out in the village is 'timeless' too and a great deal cheaper than the likes of Benidorm! Two weeks in El Burgo

Jennifer and Ken Hull. UK
Review Submitted: July 27, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2007
Casa El Palomar is a delightful apartment for two, set in the grounds of Pauline and Arthur's house on the edge of a typical Andalusian village. The house has excellent views of mountains all around and there are many walks to enjoy, and many picturesque villages in the surrounding area. The apartment is well-equipped and local shops are within walking distance.

We used a hire car and had lovely trips in all directions to many walks, to many villages and lakes, and of course, to Ronda. In late May and early June, the mimosa and oleander flowers were superb.

An excellent holiday we shall remember for a long time.

Review Submitted: July 27, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2007
We had an excellent holiday in El Burgo August 2006. Property was very clean and tidy and well equipped with everything you need. Having a swimming pool a few steps away from the house was great. We enjoyed being able to walk to the shop to buy bread every morning and to walk to the restaurants in the evening. Owners were very helpful and friendly. We would like to go again and would also recommend to friends.
Owner's Response: John and Alison, thank you for your kind comments. There are still loads of walks here that you haven't done yet! Pauline and Arthur

we were staying at casa el palomar, our friends were staying at casa cueva. we were on honeymoon and had the best holiday yet at pauline and arthurs. we do not like hustle and bustle of large resorts and this place was just ideal for us, pool on your doorstep, b'bque area, private relaxing area, shops at hand, typically spanish village with some lovely bars and resturants, needless to say we didn't get around all the bars, scenery out of this world. jump on the local bus to Rhonda and it gets even better, the journey through the mountains was fabulous, we will return hopefully soon. Thanks for making our stay at your place so special you two and kisses to jeppy the dog, miss him lots will see you soon as we can Mary & Val Fife, Scotland.

'Just wanted to say again what a lovely holiday we had and a big thank you to you both. We are getting married soon and it was a sort of pre-wedding honeymoon . . . perfect in every way. You were both so warm and welcoming, I'm sure we will be back if you will have us! Hope it all continues to go well for you and lots of other people get to share your paradise.' Very best wishes Peter and Isabel. (stayed in Casa Cueva in June 06)

'Sadly our marvellous trip has had to end and we are both back in New Zealand and back at work. We have great memories of our time in El Burgo at your lovely accommodation. Thank you for being wonderful hosts. We enjoyed your company and just loved our last night out with you in El Burgo.' regards, Terri and Vince. (stayed in Casa El Palomar in January 06)
