Balcones del Mar 5
Review Submitted: May 9, 2009
Date of Stay: April 2009
We stayed here the first week of May 2009. The weather was great - it only rained on the 1st day followed by 6 days of hot sunshine without a cloud in the sky - temperatures rising from 23 to 27 during the week.
The property description is very accurate: the property is clean, comfortable, quiet and well maintained, and the owner is very helpful. We were very pleased and have no complaints.
The location is fantastic: the property is set up on a hill around 500 metres or so from the sea and there are great views over Mojacar Playa. It took us 4 minutes to walk down to the promenade, but 8 minutes to get back - probably more as a result of the wine than the slope! The road is very quiet, so its quite safe to stagger back!
The sun rises out at sea and shines on the terrace from sunrise (around 7 am at this time of year) until about 5 ish when it disappears behind the property (this happens with all sea facing properties in Mojacar) but in this case - if you're a real sun worshipper - you can relocate to the pool area which is behind the house and only a few metres from the door, and enjoy more sun til it disappears behind the mountains (around 8.30 ish when we were there).
At night you can fall asleep to the sound of the sea (yet surprisingly you don't hear any traffic noise). And there are mosquito nets to keep the pests out if - like us - you want to leave the windows open.
Mojacar is a quiet laid back resort with little nightlife. There are a couple of nightclubs and chillout bars, but most of these were closed when we were there. There is however a big choice of places to eat, both at lunchtime and in the evening. The daytime "menu del dia" generally costs around 10 euros and is generally very good value. Several chiringuitos (beach bars) serve excellent seafood - the swordfish at the Albatross, the paella at El Paso, and the salads and Thai dishes at Tito's are particularly to be recommended. The nearest places to eat are a tapas bar "Autopull" just at the bottom of the road, where you can pull your own beer (and the tapas are excellent as well!). Next to that is a pizzeria, and a few yards further on is La Cabana, an excellent Argentinian steakhouse. There are several chiringuitos, Italian restaurants and various bars within a further - but still easy - walking distance.
All-in-all an excellent holiday base, especially if you're after a different, quieter, more DIY, type of holiday. We will definitely return.
