Our October 08 Vacation

Marina's apartment was ideal for our trip to NYC. The apartment is an easy walk to the ferry and has the most incredible view of the harbour and Manhattan... ever changing with lots of ships, barges and tugs coming and going. We even got treated to a fireworks display one night! The queen bed was super comfortable and the apartment is well stocked with the essentials, plus a phone that we could use for calling in the USA and Canada without charge (BONUS!) and the computer were nice extras. My first thought when I saw the inside of the building was that I'd made a mistake and the place would be dirty and rundown like the hallways, but that wasn't the case. The apartment is spotlessly clean (except a couple of carpet stains at the entrance), really reasonably priced and wonderfully quiet. New York itself is dirty and rundown but soon you realize that it's part of the age and character of the city and isn't important.
A couple of tips: if you want to order food to be delivered to your apartment, find out the address of the main entrance to the complex on Hamilton so the security guard can buzz you when it gets there, and it's easiest if you run down to get it rather than trying to explain which of the 6 buildings to go to! I also recommend a metrocard for getting around. We paid $47 for 14 days unlimited use on bus and subway (but doesn't work on the Airbus at JFK, that's $5/ea). Seeing the city by bus is fun... just hop on and off to see the neighborhoods. The best grocery store we found was in Union Square and is called Whole Foods Market. Very upscale and fairly expensive but a wonderful selection of prepared foods, cheeses, fresh fruit and veggies, etc. I saw online that cab drivers have a flat rate of $45 from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan, so check into that and save yourself a huge cab bill. Get the cab to take you right to the ferry terminal and Marina might be able to pick you up on Staten Island. Restaurants that we enjoyed were Sylvia's in Harlem (southern cooking - I had oxtail, collard greens and black-eyed peas), Excellent Dumpling House in Chinatown, le Parker Meridien's hamburger joint (ask at the desk, it's hard to find... and you'll have to wait in line, but it's worth it). The Metropolitan Museum's $20 admission is only suggested, we paid $2.50 each. The grounds are free to visit at Bronx's Botanical Gardens on Wed's.
